The cause is yet to be determined. Cleaning up the mess now, and taking everything out of the hull..

Okey, so it´s time for some videos of todays run. got a few good runs before the esc blew up.. Here is a video of that:

Then bad things started to happened:

I don´t know the exact cause of the esc burning up, and that makes me a bit worried.. Is the SK 180 really up for this task?
The ESC that burned was the first one in my cooling system, which leads me to believe that this was not a cooling problem, as the second ESC is fine. Next up is to much amps in the system,, here I don´t have too much experience, but I do know motors are rated at 118 amps max.
The reason might also be a bad solder. One of the connectors from the ESC to the motors had desoldered. But I don´t know if this happened before or after when the system really heated up. Last possible reason I can think of is some kind of function error in the ESC itself.

hmm, can I get some bright insights form you more experienced drivers in here??

      Thanks, Frank

Hey frank I am so sorry this happened bro. By any chance could of the esc when recessed onto the cf plate was too close to the boarf and solder joints. If any cap solder joint along with motor or batt wires hit that plate it shure as hell would make fire works.

All that slow speed running did not help!!!

Ohh nooooo!!! As mentioned Frank smaller props would have been a good start, but its hard to tell what happened. Likely pulling more amps than what the ESC's can handle. Although they have a good burst, and you had a few good runs, they would eventually fail. Don't worry too much. Get 42 props and new ESC then carry on. Make sure nothing there is touching the carbon, it's conductive and can also go boom! Adding caps would be a good idea too

I may be a bit to careful on the trottle, but that does not seem to be the problem, as all caps are fine and the second esc dont show any sign of overheating. Chris I took a look at the CF plate, and what you said might be the reason this happened. The solder joints for the caps scratched thoug the clearcote on the CF plate. And since CF is a conductive material, this resulted in a short between the caps.

Guess I'll buy a new esc and come up with a smart solution to insulate the esc from the CF plate.

The other option is to go with two SF 200 + esc's, but this would make it twise as expensive.

Smaller props could be a option, but people run this setup with 47-48 mm props and no problem. So amp draws don't seem to be the big issue here. As mentioned my gues is on the CF plate shorting it..:-)

The t-180 will work fine if set up correct. I would try the etti 150 or 220.

Frank for an untrimmed boat 447 can be too big when you don't have a lot of overhead! Once props are out of the water you're kind of safe, but submerged they are amp hogs and will put almost anything to sleep. Until you get the boat trimmed I wouldn't play with big props. I thermaled my ESC's t180 a few times with my 448's lucky they did that and not lid on fire.

Okey Kent, thanks for the input. I agree, what u are saying makes sense:-) for the record, I had some 445's on when it happened. Anyway, I'll order some 442 and get used to the boat. My dad has a t 180 that I can use, so I'll put that in. Should not be too long before I'm back on the water:-)

This may not be the reason why it fried, but a step back and retry never hurt. At least you eliminate one reason :-) ofcause also making sure the esc has no contact with any carbon parts. 42's are good to have in your prop box anyway, you can always use them when the conditions don't allow you to use larger ones. (Maybe a rough lake where you can't drive fast)

Hmm Frank, just went back to page 1 and noticed you have 2200kv on 6s. That setup is very demanding as it is and don't allow for many mistakes. No wonder you got left out of breath. On a well setup boat with that setup, you can reach 100mph, and that is definitely not something you just do.

When used properly the T180 is an almost bulletproof ESC, you will having a hard time to find something capable of more.

Beside the thing with the short-circuiting I see two problems:
-driving style: Way too much partial throttle, in the above video this is not how such a setup is intended to run, the more full-throttle the better
-smaller props: as from the above video thats a close to 100mph configuration, absolutely not good to run it at those speeds. So if you dont want to go that fast, use smaller props or something with less pitch.

                            regards,
                            Manuel

                                frank,hi from greece....very nice building.
i have the c5009 with two lehner 2240,and is good.(only stable problems at high speed)
i have see the boat, from hanspeter page, but never in a video....you have a good set up,that manuel wenny (he have help me a lot) reach a very good speed.
i agree, that, with this type of driving(low speed passes) you get hi temps on the controllers....(also please check the water outputs for plenty of outgoing water)
                                i also get my cafeine(boat name) at low speeds,and i whas lucky,that i have huge controllers,(castle 240 h.v) and no caboom hapened!!!!
please check the water outputs, for plenty of water, and try with smaller props, that they will help yours hands(i whas afraid several times to speed on...) all the best,to you and c 5009!!!!! i will be happy to share thoughts for this type of hpr boat.
