HPR C5009 - "Spirit of Norway"

I am building an HPR C5009 witch I ordered from Hans Peter in January. I have already started the build, and I figured I could share the build with you guys in here. This is my first build so the learning curve has been steep, and every hole and part of the build is done very carefully as I don´t want to make any mistakes, even though I am still learning. The experience with Hans Peter was very good, however there were some minor snags getting all the hardware to Norway, but all in all the service was very good! Feel free to comment, ask and share your experience.

Well thats enough small talk, lets get started with introducing the build…

Introduction

Hull:
HPR C5009 Carbon fiber. From what I have read here on the forum people tend to be very impressed by Hans Peters hulls, and I was not disappointed!

Motors:
2x TP 4050 (40x83mm) with 2200kv, with original water cooling jackets.

ESC:
2x Turnigy 180A V3, last version from OSE.

Hardware:
Drives, Rudder and hydraulics are original HPR.

LIPO:
2x Zippy 6S 5000 45C from Hobbyking.

Servo:
Savox 1251 mg low profile servo - also have the low profile servo mount, but don´t think I´ll be using it.

LIPO mount:
Lipo mount system made by Manuel.

Theme:
I have decided to go with "The Spirit of Norway" theme from 97-98 season. Custom made vinyl will be supplied by Kent, and I think it will look awesome when done!

Nice one Frank! Really looking forward to this one done.... Phuuuu. It's a a hard one to cut this one, but you are going to be the one with a million pieces lol. Got 60% done already.

Drives, rudder and hydraulics
I have already done the part of the build I was most concerned about. This was of course the installation of all the hardware, and it took a few days before got nerves for drilling in this hull. Frist I poured 12 ml slow curing epoxy into the rudder standoff, and inserted a piece of carbon. Also cut out and epoxied carbon for where the drives go through the hull, both top and back mounts.

Then it was on to making templates for drives and rudder before I started drilling the biggest hole of them all, 12mm for the drives. Used a 3mm bore and worked my way up to 10mm before I did the last two millimeters with my Dremel to get the perfect placement.

Next up were the top mounts for the drives. Here I used the same method as everyone else to get them parallel to the tunnel, and it worked out very good!

For the rudder and hydraulics I just used the templates, drilled the holes, and after some minor adjustments on the rudder holes it was spot on. Also applied silicon around all the holes to make it watertight.

This is really cool man!
Make me think of "the old days" when Røkke was in the team, and they where racing arround Tromøy in Arendal.
And Ugland was racing with his diesels. That was cool!
Would be nice to see a race with more replica boats like this from the same period.

Update

Okay, so its time to bring this thread up to date on what has happened the last couple of days. I have been otherwise occupied, so haven’t had the time to get the thread up to date. First the things that have shipped in:

Anodized screws, nuts and wachers:

All of these are from Pro Bolt. With good service and fast shipping I thought they were a good deal! Also the red color will be a nice touch to continue the theme inside the boat.

Just received this a few days ago, so can´t say too much about it yet. But what I can say is that it looks good. Love the touch screen, and I´m quite happy with the crazy color choice.. With this one I can also keep an eye on temperatures during my runs. It also has the ability to measure speed and voltage. Maybe on a later stage I can come back with a more detailed review if you guys are interested.


So, lets get back to the build. I started the work on the fastening system for my hatch. I have decided on using two carbon fiber lips in the front of the hatch, while on the back I will be using two countersunk M4 bolts. First I filled the back corners with epoxy, and added a 2mm carbon fiber sheet inside the epoxy. Her is how that turned out:

Motor mounts

Next I cut out holes for the “lips” both in the hatch and the boat, before I epoxyed them in, and laminated them with one layer ofcarbon fiber. Here you can see the result of this:

I also glued in the motor mounts. For now I just used some 5min epoxy to keep them in place, and later on I will use some CF cloth and slow curing epoxy to make sure they don’t go anywhere

Thanks for the comments guys! Yeah I agree with you there fjelling. I´m too young to remember much about that period, bet for sure like the concept of offshore racing, and building scale boats!

And chris, I have seen your builds, and it certainly looks amazing! Those red bull carbon parts are looking too good! Hopefully I will get a result close to that when I´m done=)

I have a question guys!:-) When installing the brass tube and teflon liner for the flex cable, how is this done? Is the brass tube supposed to go into the drives? and is the teflon liner supposed to go even further into the drives?? and finally, do I epoxy them in, or use something else to fasten them? Any help appreciated=)

Use silicon to glue into drive mounting/ base next I had to bore out my drive base so when bored out there was a stop made in it to keep brass from going in too far. Stop the brass about 3-4 mm from end of flange and then I ran the teflon until it was a few mm away from bearing in drive
