Twin outboard center console build

I called that exact place one time to get ONE delryn gear made for a vintage Nikko truck, and they wanted to charge me like a grand or something ridiculous.


I havent found the pack of two new gears i thought i had yet, but if you want i'll send you the two outboards that have 4 gears in them that seem decent still.....they arent new but dont look too bad..........one outboard is cracked on the lower unit, there are two cowls and two of those coupler gears. One shaft wont come out for me. They will never be used by me again so no biggie.

Yeah if you aren't going to ever use them I'll gladly take them off your hands. All I really want are the gears out of them. I have an entire spare motor which was used once then blew the gears. The only other thing that can go bad is the 550 motor and they sell for 12 bucks at Tower.

Did you have problems with water getting inside the cowlings? Mine were filling up after just a minute of run time. I used some blue pin stripe to tape the seem and now no water gets in.

Man....lots of R&D going into this little project. I got into RC helicopters not to long ago and they were easier to dial in than this boat.

You will have to have the Scarab Sport done in white vinyl at a local sign shop as they are white on a blue background.

Well all I really need is the "Scarab Sport" in white. I'm going to paint the blue stripe and apply the white decals. The biggest problem is finding the graphic.

Water got in there constantly............i used electrical tape on the seam...........still some got in. PM me your address and i'll send the stuff i have..............didnt find the brand new gears.

You may try a local tool and die shop to see if they will make some gears.........you know, one of the guys that will work 3 hours later in the evening and you can pay him on the side.

Just did another test run in the canal. This was the first test run with the new batteries. I think I am pretty happy with the performance. The boat is a little slower with the NiMH batteries. Less volts and more weight. But I think its where the motors want to run. They weren't hot at all and the ESCs weren't hot either. And this run was with the 36 mm 3 blade props.

Only had two issues. A little water still got into the motor cowlings. It is coming in through the vents on the top, the spray goes everywhere.

Big problem sealing those vents up or will the motors get to hot?

The other problem is when the batteries get low to a certain point I lose all control of the boat. I think I might put in a separate battery for the receiver.

Another question for you pros. The weight of the boat. I know the most critical thing is the center of gravity. Well with the NiMH batteries and the little pack for the receiver I got the CG perfect. No easy task with two heavy motors hanging 3" off the transom along with the weight of the bracket.

OK so this little 31" twin motor boat weighs in at 10 pounds. Seems heavy considering my 50" boat with a 26cc gas engine weighs 15 pounds RTR.

Kind of a porker.........but you are running about 2.5 pounds worth of nimh in it. I bet it looks better with the extra weight and a little less speed.....real scale..........however.........

I'll get a video this weekend. In my canal I am at the end so all the high speed runs are either of the boat going away from me or running toward me.

On Sundays I take my boat (real boat) to this park where a lot of boaters pull up and hang out. The water there is calm and shallow so I can run the boat back and forth and get a good profile view. If I can get my wife or buddy to operate the camera I'll get a video.

Yeah she is heavy, but it does make for a good scale look. When getting on plane nice and easy she throws a decent wake.

I think you need a bigger boat personally. That looks too small for those motors. maybe a 40" like this would be a better candidate?

Also yours is on the heavy side, but it is more scale like. My 40" scarab is 5 lbs without batteries, so 7ish RTR I guess. But it floats to light for scale. The chines are barely touching in the rear!

Two outboards would cure that.

After searching for the Scarab logo for a while here is my best suggestion. The blue stripe would be paint or airplane trim vinyl from the hobby shop.

The left slanting and "Sport" are not available. A graphic artist can probably reproduce those rather easily.

I also have the full vector file in Illustrator format which can be used by a sign shop (maybe useful for either models or full size boats).

Ray, I couldn't find the "Sport" either. What you have above is freakin perfect!!!!

I put the blue stripe on using the airplane vinyl but I need to do it over. Its a little thick and wavy.

If you can make that "Scarab Sport" in silver or light grey it should work.

I thought about a bigger hull but it would have been out of scale. These EP1 outboards are 7" tall. The 250 HP Evinrudes on my real boat are 7 feet tall. So to be scale its going to be 1"=1 foot.

That meant I needed a 30-31" hull to replicate my 30 foot hull. The only thing slightly out of scale is the hight of the freeboard. Its a little low on the model.

But overall I am happy with the turnout. I plan to go into full detail with radar arch, radar, antennas, gauges, upholstery, ect.

Just saw you used paint to make that. Wow you did much better than me. Mine wasn't nearly as good.

Can you make that so the letters are 10mm tall and the length proportionate? That should be about right for scale.

I realize you are doing this to get weight balance, but I'd REALLY recommend that you move those ESCs back in the boat, and get those motor wires as short as practical. Having them that long really builds up resistance and generates a lot of heat. You are losing quite a bit of voltage over that length of wire. I think there may be other electrical related, ripple currents, etc., that may come into play as well. Generally a good idea to keep the motor wires shorter.
