    More UL 1 questions

OK, just my UL 1 and it looks awesome! There are a few things I like to do before I run it. Here is a small list of things I would like to do right away, and would appreciate your comments and suggestions on them:
*Replace the motor/ESC connectors to 5.5? Or just leave them for now?
*What size AWG wire do I use to make connections to the battery and ESC?
*Would like a photo showing the 2 2S battery packs plugged into the ESC. Not sure how the batteries will be plugged in useing the 5.5 bullets. Will I have to make a small jumper for this?
*What size nut driver do I use on the Octura pro nuts, and are the nuts 10-28(I need spares)? What size allen wrenches as well fit this boat?
*Is is a good idea to replace the ESC battery Deans to 5.5 bullets?
*Should I add a 5mm thrust bearing with Octura small coupling?

I do plan on adding a .150 Octura flex drive, b/s prop and possibly the OSE water jacket. I will be adjusting my strut height and angle as well. I will probably have to modify the stuffing tube to the strut to be able to adjust it. I will add a piece of shrink tubing there. And there is more...but for right now I want to tackle this.

I have been racing mine for 2 years and the ESC to Motor connectors have been flawless. I would leave them alone.

The battery (Deans) connectors should be replaced with 5.5mm bullets.
No harness is needed. I'll post a pic shortly.

Leave the connectors to the motor alone. Replace deans with traxxas plugs. These are plenty for stock set-up. Leave stuffing tube alone, you don't need that much adjustment back there. File leading edge of rudder back to water pickup hole. Locktight every nut and bolt and set screw, trust me. Try 40/52/3 to start. Will be a good start. Don't bother with thrust bearing, it's more money wasted... It's just not needed

here are a few pics. i added a dedicated water pickup for motor using some small brass tubing in first pick. rudder filing was suggested by grim racer himself. i put in a new motor mount cause mine actually broke... nobody has had this problem but me i think lol. also i made air dam with wiper blades. and lastly try moving the steering rod up to the next hole... otherwise even with the steering rate all the way up it will make really wide turns. run your batteries all the way up front, and file the front edge of the turn fin sharp. i would say youre looking to mod things that arent a problem... these mods are where its at. lastly check you motor coupler, some of these boats have crappy ones that are bent from the factory. just spin the prop and make sure the coupler doesnt wobble. if it does replace it

Thanks for the photos, I got it! My Turnigy 5000 mahs come with 5.5 connectors. Are Traxxas 5.5 the same as OSE 5.5's?

Thinking of greasing the shaft, connecting the batts and going for a short test run down at the pond. Just want to see this baby go! Then I'll leave it alone till the spring

no traxxas are not 5.5 bullets. theyre a different style connector. i find them less prone to accidents. bullets can be confusing to hook up. many guys have ruined batteries with these. but i guess if your batteries come with them then go for it. and once you run it you wont just put it away till spring lol....

I had a some time to day to look at the UL-1 and the batteries bought. The Turnigy 5000 mah 2C 30C fit perfect My b/s/p props from Chuck are on their way here. COG is about 3 1/2" behind the turn fin. Stock strut depth is 3/4" deep. Angle on strut looks good. I can't run it, ponds frozen.

I believe this to be a 3rd gen boat, thanks Steve at OSE. Cap is HUGE and turn fin is very stiff, I am bending the turn fin and the mount stays put. I very excited about running this boat. As an ARR it probably one of the best! I been doing much reading on this. Nothing really needs to be changed or upgraded, it's awesome as is!

Before I change out the drive shaft, water jacket, collet and ESC plugs, I want to run it as is. Might grease the shaft before it's first run that's all. I don't even want to change the battery connections yet. So I might make a adapter to go from ESC Deans to 5.5 bullets on my 5000 mah Turnigys? Run it with stock prop. If the water jacket does not leak, I might leave it alone. Keep my OSE water jacket NIP!

Then after the first runs I upgrade to a .150 Octura flex cable, Octura 5mm short collet with thrust bearing, OSE 5.5 bullets on ESC. Then put my Grim 40/57 b/p/s prop on and make adjustments on the strut. I'll have my Duratrax heat meter handy after each run to keep an eye on temps.

Maybe they are better now but on my 1st gen boat the motor-esc bullets had a bad soldering job. It left me stranded in the middle of the pond so I changed them out.

If you want to protect your receiver and servo you can give them a shot of Corrosion-X and I cut a piece of Shamwow to fit in the tub around the RX and servo.

I did the pour-foam mod to mine as well from Darin's thread.
