thanks for the reply, that was on a x445, the stinger was angled down a tad so I was thinking I may need to raise it to level and adjust the trim tabs but I ruined the shaft b4 I could give it a try. Please help me work out this stuffing tube issue, someone has said to loose the teflon and just run the brass, is this a good idea? and if so, I belive I'll need a 7/32 tube, do I just run the flex shaft through that with a heap of greese or is there something I'm missing?Originally posted by Rumdog View PostWhat prop you running? The teflon should not be a problem.
Please post pics of rear side view and rear view of transom hardware.
Strut should be level to start, big part of your problem...

What size flex are you running? If you're running .187", don't use 7/32" tube...Use 1/4".

I am running a 3/16" flex shaft, the one I destroyed was a Hughey and the new one I've ordered is an OSE. I was useing 9/32 brass with the teflon tube recommended by ose to suit .187 flex in 9/32 tube. Due to having to rebuild this area, I'm looking for options, a guy said to get rid of the teflon, I assumed he ment just use brass
from what I've found on the ose page the 7/32 tube suits the .187 flex when not using teflon, this is not my statement, it's a question, is this all correct and if so when setting up a stuffing tube with no teflon, what do I do? Whats better, with or without teflon?

Wow, you did what to a Hughey .187" flex cable?? I use .187 and never had a problem with that much power.
With or without is a personal preference really it seems...
How long were your running on the water before your cable broke, ? or what???

I ran the first run for about 3 minutes, app. 1/2 way through the run it made a strange sound, you'll see in the video where I pick up the boat, I gave it a few rmp and the noise went away, so I dropped it back in and kept going. Definitely 1/4" bro. I know it says 7/32"...I know all too well...
Note that the cable is welded to the tube after the breakage...seems that will break them every time.

Really that much run time on 6S rpm's is alot to ask for from your lube.
You might be better off with the suggestions above for tubing size, possibly an oiler would help. No teflon may be better for longer run times provided you have enough lube.
Basically you ran out of lube and welding started.

That pic is my (old) boat Ray. His boat (I saw the pic in his build thread) wollowed out the end of the stuffing tube like it was whipping, then broke just before the tube. Looks to me like the teflon may be the go, I want runtime over speed, the batteries only just had the edge taken off them, I used one of them in my truck to discharge it last night and got app.22 minutes b4 lvc kicked in.Originally posted by ray schrauwen View PostOOOOH, that picture, o.k. Keith the 7/32 is to tight? I have run .187 is 7/32 tubing and its fine. I didnt have any big bends. But if you guys think 1/4" is better I will change it?Steven Vaccaro

Yeah, when I put it together it seemed a little too close tolerance but I went ahead and tried it. I ran about (estimated) 3 minutes before it broke. I was running in the 60's in a 34" cat so it was a fairly high stress application. When I bent the tube, I put a rod and sleeve inside it so it wouldn't crush or oval, and I kept the bend to a minimum, but it was in a single drive cat so it had some bend. I have heard from people that have ran 7/32" with 3/16" flex, but from what I hear its very little to no bend applications. I think its one of those things that may work, but for someone like the OP here who just started FE boating and broke a flex in the first five minutes, I would definitely recommend being safe and going with the 1/4" stuff. It's what I use now.
If it's worked for you, I dont know that I would change it, but maybe put something in there that says 1/4" can be used if 7/32" is too tight in bent tubes?...give the builder a choice between the two?
