Your MG that started off as a hull

I would start with a 445.
Are you getting a 1515.If so you will need a larger tail ring on that motor mount.You may also need my template for the CF rails on the motor mount.
You will only need a cheap UBEC as you will only run up to 5s,right(based on 1515)
As far as the servo mount goes,isn't there a nice wood one in there?Oh,and you will need a servo rod and rubber boot.
Do you have connectors?

I already ordered the 1515.
Tail ring for the motor mount? I don't have that.

And I don't have any of those other items you mentioned.

Have you signed up to Fightercat yet?Ben still has the tail rings.They are 42mm for the 1515(because of the fins).
I have had no problems with just a .150 cable but I think a .187 will go into the stuffing tube if you remove the teflon liner.Let me know then I can steer you in the right direction for a good cable/motor coupler as I do have a favorite.

Alright guys, Let's take it slow with Ed, I think Ed is being overwhelmed with all the info that we guys are giving him. maybe we need to be a little more specific. Ed never had a boat before. I remember when I first started with boats. Brushless, Ubec, 2.4ghz, prop balancing, portside, starboard side, transom, ride pads, prop pitch, tongue, are either still non existent or sounds alien to me. Hehehe! Well, we all started as newbie eh? So Ed, is there any terms about boating that you don't understand? please let us know. I know I can speak for the rest of the guys that we are here to help you step by step. We just need to know if we are on the same page. There are tons of nice parts that will work with your MG. We can only suggest things to you but it's up to you which of them will you get. If you get confused about anything, don't hesitate to ask!

Hi Ed,

I prepared a simple visual aide about basic parts that you will use in building your first boat. The sizes of the parts shown below does not represent the actual sizes you will be needing. These are just visual representations of the parts with regards to the terms used in boating. Hope these helps bud!

Rubber boot: This is where the servo push rod passes through the "Transom" (rear of the Boat) and the rubber boot keeps the water from entering the hull.

The "Tailring" is the ring that supports the back of your motor. it should be big enough for your motor to slide through. It's a part of the motor mount assembly.

Flex cable: A piece of cable that connects your motor via the "Motor coupler" to your "prop shaft" and it acts like a flexible axle shaft like the solid straight shaft that we have in our rc. There are several types and sizes of flex cables. Some has round end on one side and the other end is square. Most commonly used is the .187( 3/16) thick cables with one square end and round end on the other side.

Motor coupler/collet: This is attached to your motor shaft and grips the flex cable with the udjustable tip. ( just like the tip of your dremel rotary tool)

prop shaft: This type connects to your flex cable that has a square end on one side. The shaft also has a square hole on one side to connect with the flex cable. Some shaft has the flex cable soldered directly into to them. The prop shaft also holds your drive dog and propnut that keeps your prop in place.


Here is a example of a inline strut drive: Here you will see the Stuffing tube( the brass tube), strut, strut bracket (on top of the strut that screws to your transom), propshaft with the nylon washer,drivedog, propeller, propnut. and the Rudder blade.(consecutively shown in the photo)


Just a example of a push rod. But get the one with a clevis.


Clevis attached to the servo arm. This same goes with the rudder arm.


Drive dog.


Teflon washer


stuffing tube is a brass tube where your teflon liner and flex cable passes through.

silicone liner: It's the white straw like thing in the picture. it prevents the flex cable from binding with the stuffing tube during running.

Stephen was and is still my FE guru - he taught me everything regarding FE and we always talk on a daily basis which I believe is now going on for about a year! The wealth of info is indeed overwhelming at times and questions get asked over & over as time went by. I cannot thank him enough for all that I've learned and hopefully I could repay the favor someday!
Apart from his teachings, I still school myself up to now with my daily visits in the various rc boating forums I belong to - not counting the many online stores that we visit and drool at stuff we wanted to buy! hahahaha!

Just hang in there and Im sure you'll be able to understand as time goes by. Remember, its just a hobby so dont forget to have fun!

Sorry guys,Ed,please do feel free to ask questions.Apparently I can blow alot of terms out but I can explain them well too.I've got a kid on here I've been working with and we are up to blueprinting and props now. I would have posted pics but Steve(OSE) seems to be out of stock on alot of stuff.

Ed.On the FC (fightercat) site there is a resources tab on the left by the Forums tab.This can be useful and has good information.And if bored do read his "Terms of Service"
Also make use of the search bar on any site and be prepared to read,but learn.

Funny, but I had to read page 1 and 2 of this thread to verify ............ yes, the MG "Hull & Canopy Only" bought from Phil's (or probably in any LHS for that matter) has the wooden tray that houses the motor mount, servo mount with screws, battery trays and stuffing tube with teflon which is pre-bent and installed. Jeesh, dont you guys ever read the first few pages of this thread anymore? hahahahaha!

However, my flex shaft was tight when inserted inside the teflon tube so I discarded the teflon and went full commando! hehehe.
Also, I discarded the whole wooden tray so I could add reinforcement to the hull. Of course, this meant I loose the stock motor mount base and servo mount but all in the name of strength and speed. The hull was reinforced, added a beefier and appropriate motor mount and a new servo tray was made.

Did anyone inform Ed about sharpening of the ride pads? Well, its somewhere within the first few pages of this thread! hahahaha!
