Easy-off is basically sodium hydroxide and needs to be heated to 160 degrees to reach maximum effectiveness (that is why an oven is supposed to be warm first). It is also used in drain/toilet cleaning products. It will react with aluminum as it is used to clean masks in the auto headlight making process as the plastic headlights use a coating of vaporized aluminum on the reflectors. It will not cause any problems with steel, plastic, etc. I am thinking that what is being cleaned is what is left of the burnt aluminum on the various boat parts from the cooling plate/tubes.

P.S. It will also remove the galvanizing on steel as it is a strong base (also known as lye) and galvanizing is achieved with an acid process.

I would be very careful using EASY-OFF HD in an FE boat. This is a caustic product and the maker warns about using it on stainless steel or aluminum - it can pit the metal. The maker warns not to use it around Teflon, but is unclear about its effects on plastics. After use, EASY-OFF says the treated surfaces should be "rinsed in a vinegar and water solution" to neutralize the caustic residue.

I've had excellent success with denatured alcohol in removing stains and smell from a ESC fire. Safer than EASY-OFF, it seems to work about as well. If you are using EASY-OFF just be aware that there could be problems.

WOW that looked like it worked great!
Did it take some of the smell out of the hull too? I had one cuda 125 burn on me a while back and the smell never went away. The esc litterally looked like a piece of charcoal and the whole inside of the hull looked like your cowl.

What To Use To Clean Boat After Burn ESC???

It did work for me right after Castle Creations Hydra-120 went on fire under the hood of my BJ-26. Ohh man she was black inside, never mind the smell. It was so strong many other guys from the race team could not believe how bed it was. Went home and was trying so many cleaners but no one of them was able to get rid of burn stains and the smell. Last one to try was..... See the picture. It works like a charm. On the background you see yellow huch that was very dark from another hydra-120 fire and when I got the boat it came with this huch still very dark from ESC fire and smoke. Now it is clean and yellow again!!!Try it!
