Bullet connectors...best way to install them.

ok guys...newbie with bullet connectors in hand is ready to cut off the deans on the lipos and solder up castles 5.5mm bullets. Question...is there a standard way to arrange these...ie....female connectors on the battery and males on the esc? That is the norm with the other connectors...but here is the problem I see with that. Unless the wires or shrink is color coded you're asking for smoke! Check the pic out of the UL-1 setup....the series connection has 2 black wires but one of them is connected to the positive. How do you know which is the correct wire to plug the positive female battery lead into if they are the same black color using the same male connector?

My thought is to use a male on one battery lead and female on the other...that way you can't plug into the wrong connector....but which lead should have the male plug...positive or negative? Again...what is the standard.

I've seen folks put either male or female on the positive or negative. I believe that most put both a male and a female on the same battery. Yes, it is tempting to plug it into itself, but this is avoided by fashioning a cap on the end of the male connector to prevent this.

The reason why people put both male and female connectors on the same battery is to allow running the batteries in series.
SERIES: ESC - to - Batt 1 + to - Batt 2 + to + on ESC

I suggest using females on the battery for both. Use different colored heat shrink for polarity, and make sure the heat shrink (when both mated and open) completely covers all the copper.

If you mix them, there is the possibility of the male touching the female and starting a fire. If they're both female, that can't happen.

MY norm is this: males on the motors, females on the ESC. Batteries, positive female, negative male (so I don't get nuttin crossed).

However, I have received electronics with all combinations so it remains to be your own convention.

I use a plumbing torch to get things hot enough. Flood the little chamber with solder then cook it for a couple more seconds until solder pervades the wires. In the end do what you like, then keep doing it on all your stuff. it takes seconds to change things so just get started....

Oh well, I guess there's all kinds of setups. I think it is a personal preference.

Ok...so what I'm hearing is there's no standard with this....and yes Andy, females on both sides of the battery would be safer especially when ya toss all the packs in a lipo sack... If I had a piece of red shrink tube to use it would be easy...but of course nothing is ever easy with me, so I will need to find another way to mark the black male connector to show it's the one that goes to the red female in that harness...otherwise....I play "On top of ole Smoky"

So how do you hook cells together for series with all females it won't happen.Packs come with the correct colored wires so how would you miss that no matter what conenctor?

This is the reason why I stated one female and one male on the first response, that is, if he wanted to run in series.

I have mine female on the + and male on the - of the bat. I have it like this for 2 reasons #1 you cant hook it up backwards by accident .#2 the + has no metal exposed so there is not much off a chance you could short it on any thing. also I always keep the + side covered in till i am ready to plug it in ( heat shrink works good for this just don't heat to much)

Thanks for the generous offers guys...a piece of red shrink will solve the ID issue on the series harness above.

Jeff...look at the harness...it has 2 black wires going into a red and black connector...if you choose the wrong black wire....what would happen?

I'm still undecided on females for both battery connectors or the line6 suggestion which is red female/black male....that one sounds good if I use a protecting cover (hmmmmm) on the male...and is less like to short than with a male on the positive wires.

Put a piece of heat shrink on a connector of which will be a different color, like Andy said. Then plug the correct ones together and then heat the shrink and then cut a circle around each and never a hook-up problem again unless your blind in one eye and can't see out of the other,LOL!
