I always had cooling issue with the tiny rudder pick up on the Popeye's TFL rudder, the holes are on both sides and the profile is short, I tried to elongate them but it will break the middle partition.
I am toying with the idea to add a prop wash pick up.
This is a temporary trial version, just to see if it does help.
This is a first on my boats and don't know if the position is more or less correct.

Should be mounted at 2 PM that was the nitro rule you can open up the rudder with a jewlers round file,, if your good use a dremel PS you need to heat the joi nt more get the soilder to flow it will self level better

The prop wash looks rite.
I remember having the fe version of the pb Elam and the rudder had the holes on both sides.
Elongating the holes to the leading edge of rudder did not work? Maybe just elongate one side?

Obviously the best way to see if the rudder pickup is working is to run the boat without the hose connected. If it works nice you'll see a nice stream of water shooting str8 up

Yes, and the partition towards the rear is already gone, so my thinking is that no matter what I do, whether elongate the leading edge or enlarging it, if the middle is gone, would it not scoop up water properly?

And that is the problem, the material is all machined away and prevents a nice long scoop, hence a short scoop ( leading edge whatever you call it).

I used to run my propwash pickups just inside the tip of the prop and like Chris said '2 o clock'. That is where the most water is pushed off.
