Alternative grease for prop shaft and cable???

Guys... be careful... Thicker, higher viscosity grease causes more drag, which can build heat...

I've found a good coating of either the Pro Boat or the GrimRacer grease works pretty well.

For racing, however, I usually use the "secret sauce", the recipe to which was handed down to me by much better boaters! :)

Fair enough on the viscosity. I've used both the Pro Boat or the GrimRacer grease and they seem identical to each other as well as the grease I use on my trailer bearings. Do you know, and can divulge, the weight of those RC boat greases?

My own custom blend was dubbed "coyote pi** by Greg Schweers at least fifteen years ago. Yes, it is yellowish in colour.....but it works great.

Did I mention that Greg is a local racer here now...

Mine is a little different. Got the recipe from Brian, whom I'm sure got it from someone more senior than himself.

Have to lube more often, but these are race boats. Maintenance is part of the deal.

I used to make my own swill. It was Valvoline synthetic thinned down with Prolong and Royal Purple synthetic motor oil. It was pretty stuff. Got to be a pain though.

Howard turned me onto this stuff a couple years ago.

It's the lazy mans solution but it's high quality and just thin enough that you don't have to worry about drag. I typically can race a whole set of 4 heats on my spec boats without revisiting the grease. My big boats are all 1/4" so I like to check for the 4th round. Get those wrong and the stuff tube gets hot.

HAHA! In my profession ( string instrument in an orchestra) people cook their own rosin and swear by their secret recipes and they say it makes a difference in the tone, also what kind of horse hair to use on the bow, etc. I couldn't care less these days since I am consumed with this hobby . When my colleagues make fun of me, I show them some of you guy's video, usually the SAW event ones, their jaws just drop, I love watching that. I enjoy seeing that almost more than my own boats runnning fast ! I am doing my best to spread this hobby!

Well, my initial impression is that this does have some different characteristics than the Grim /PB grease, I ran my rigger on three packs and a total of 6 or 7 minutes . When I pulled out the cable, what's left was still quite thick and gooey,mainly on the stub shaft ( which is good) , so the floating bushing is in good care. However, I usually see quite a bit left on the cable as with the Grim grease, although it's been thinned down by the end of runs, but it's there, now with this Red grease, there isn't much left. I must say that this is not scientific as I should have used the Grim grease under the same condition, on my next run I will do that. I had a radio glitch that persistantly left me stuck on the rightside of the lake, so I could not really strecth my legs so to speak.

And thanks to all you racers and knowledgeable people who shared your insights and info.


BTW, I do use a teflon liner on my stuffing tube---well, this was how the set up was when I got my rigger.

Just wondering....are you using a spektrum radio by chance?

No, I had a Tactic on hand and the hull came with the antenna hole plugged with silicone, but I thought Tactic would do since my wood tunnel ran beautifully, so yes, I will switch for my next run, had to come home early to prepare my daughter's pool party tomorrow.

If you use a PTFE liner, water is a great alternative to grease, there are not many known materials with less friction than water lubricated PTFE.

Chainsaw bar oil works very well, slightly thick oil but sticky & much less friction than grease.

Im running marine trailer bearing grease thinned with atf or motor oil or risking and in my oiler im running a mix of rislone, marvel mystery oil, and stp oil treatment.

Until you realize what crap gets spit out from a real boat engine then we look like we are good for the environment. I second the lucas I am using their marine grease with the synthetic marine gear oil mixed. It's about 70-80% grease and 20-30% gear oil.
