Alternative grease for prop shaft and cable???

Hello, came across this jar of grease in an automotive store, I like the size of it, makes dipping the flex cable into the grease a lot more meaningful than the small marine grease we use. This way when I twist the cable in the grease, it is already coated with a nice thick layer when I pull it out. I repeat the process several times until the whole back end is lubed ( no pun intended )
Just wondering if anyone has toyed with the idea of these automotive grease.

That is some great grease, I use it at my shop for wheel bearings. I never thought about using it on my Flex Shafts, I'm gonna give it a try!

I do have to say, the shaft lube I buy for $4 a jar looks and smells an awful lot like the marine axle grease I use on my boat trailers....

That is some great grease, I use it at my shop for wheel bearings. I never thought about using it on my Flex Shafts, I'm gonna give it a try!

Thanks for the link, very interesting! I wonder too, years ago when I was into target shooting, I used air tool oil for all the slide and guide rod work, it worked really well, but this oil is too thin alone for model boat, IMO, one would have to mix it with STP or similar oil additive.

Yup, I thought that smell was familiar as well, it is the lithium though. I like this as the consistency is similar to what I have come to expect from using the Grim grease, not too tacky but just enough to provide lubrication and retard any water from intruding into the hull.
Racers may prefer thinner lubricant though...

Anything from Lucas is top notch bro . if it has to do with automotive lubes, I've tried it. At the moment I am using marine grease, and I have a can of Cam2 red wheel bearing grease I really like....

I picked some of this up at Parts Source. Same color, smell, texture as the grim grease.
Seems to work awesome after 5 trips out to the lake.(I wipe and re-apply after every trip) She comes back with a coat on the flex shaft everytime. Was only $4.99 for this big tube also.

I picked up a pound tub of CV joint grease that looks, smells and feels exactly the same as the Grim grease, only difference I can tell is I paid the same amount for a pound tub as a little 2oz tub from the LHS.
I mix it with outboard gear oil about 50-50.
The CV grease came from Parts Source her in Canada, just their house brand.

I was eyeing that as well but was not sure how it is inside. Thanks so much for the pix. I will try them as well, I like the depth of the container, one dip and twist will coat the cable!!!

You know I've been told that one of the sponsored racers rubs the lube on their shaft and then wipes most of it off before inserting it in the tube (good gracious that sounds..well...I'm TRYING to keep this family friendly)
I just don't have the guts to try that method.

I am not surprised to hear that, I do remember reading awhile back that some racer members said it is too thick ( the viscosity, not girth) , for them. I use mobil 10W30 to dilute if it is needed like in my Tunnel Outboard drive ( yes, I dissemble the outdrive every time I run the boat ) when there are bushings that really need oil instead of thick grease. Personally I like the tacky quality because quite frankly I find the free play on the stinger and strut to be too much to my liking. It reduces the subjective feel of free play and helps my confidence when I wiggle the shaft on the bench and that's all it matters to me. ( you know, this really will be PG-13 rated after we are done with this thread)

Good lord how can this not be a pg-13 thread at least. Haha! I agree that the aquacraft speed grease looks identical to axle grease o bearing grease for trailers and has that same odor. Watching for final result.

For our application, no doubt any marine or axle grease will be fine. They're all made in the same place anyway
