I have been told to saturate the water with salt, so you cant technically put too much in, if you do the water will saturate and you will have some salt at the bottom of your salt water, if you want to avoid wastage the saturation point of salt and water varies between 36.6grams of salt per litre at 0C and 39g/L at boiling point, I normally mix it hot, as hot water absorbs the salt easier which means a lot less effort stirring. Maybe for a gallon you would have to do it cold as trying to heat it would be a PITA, but that is a LOT of dead LiPos if you need that much.

I just pour a cup in a bucket with enough water to cover the leads and check the voltage a week later. Have one soaking now.

There was an article that was published in the Roostertail a year or so ago on safe disposal of Lipo's. I believe it was based on Thunderpower's recommendations. It called for a cup of salt to bucket of water (a gallon or two).

Yes, I just disposed of a bunch of them. I just buy one cheap brand big salt container (the round one) and dump it in a bucket of water stir it up and put them in. What is that grey color residue that comes up after a day or so? Not too pretty looking water when you are done.

Do you need to cut the wrap open on each individual cell?
I too want to get rid of some old ones but wasn't sure about this procedure, remembering reading somewhere the wrapper must be cut open.

You don't need to open the pack up or any thing like that, simply put the pack into the bucket of salt water.

All the salt does is make the water conductive. This slowly shorts out the cells without the chance of heat, fire etc. Saturation (about 3 pounds per gallon) is neither required nor desired.

I thought it was desirable to fully discharge (via charger and 12 volt auto globe) the packs before immersion, (to avoid any flare ups in the bucket? or problems with the garbage truck?) which is what I did with my last 5 packs. http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...s/set1/sad.gif

This isn't rocket science, the batteries just need to be fully discharged before disposal. You can toss a fully charged pack in a bucket of salt water. If I have a bad pack, I'm not putting it on the charger for any reason. Like Jay said, the salt just makes the water more conductive. Check the voltage, if they are at zero, toss them out. If not let them soak a little longer.

                              Thanks for the tip guys

Kinda like a revamped version of when we used lightbulb harness's to completely discharge nicd packs back in the day.
