Endbell Heat Sink

Jeff -Your heat soak theory has a lot of merit. I remember watching the temp gauge in my pre 1970 car rise after I shut her down with the ignition on. Also, anyone that has blown cold water thru the cooling system 5min after a run would agree the water is coming out hot for the first few seconds (i.e. heat soak). The fact that the motor is angled upwards ain't helping those wires either.

Yeah and often at our club races if you finish in the front of the pack the boats sit out in the infield for quit a while sometimes so heats just keep on rising by the time get to bring them in so I am sure the motor is actually running at a decent temp when at speed so maybe I just need to get a fan and blow it on the motor after the runs and run some cold water through the lines for a little to bring the temps back down because now that I am pushing 45+ in my 1/10 scale my motors are certainly generating some xtra heat and I would like to keep them in check as much as possible!!

I am running 50mph in my 1/12 scale with a 43mm prop and temps are just fine but would like to try out a 45mm prop but as tony says when you start running the 45s with the UL power it starts to heat up. Pushing the limits and props is fun but certainly takes its toll on the equipment regardless if your setup is fine tuned or not. It is just part of the game but IMO we can keep it in check with a little thought and ingenuity. I like where you headed with all this and you have me watching and thinking!

You guys have me on the hunt for a fan problem is not much room in the boats I run so the heat sink idea or something else might be the way to go. Still think a small pump to keep temps down while boat is waiting to come in would do wonders.

Certainly couldn't hurt now just gotta find a small enough 1 that will fit in small boat and run off 12+ volts.

I'm gaining more confidence in the heat sink idea after running more big props. By now I'm sure I would have burned the wires (20+ runs) without the sink.

I have a blank machined up and can't decide which way to go. Option 1 is the water cooled version (2pc with top plate), option 2 is just a heat sink. The sink from post #1 is working so well I'm apt to just cut some slots and be done with it. However, the water cooled option might be much more effective.

How about the fins with a pair of copper tubes going through it also?

Hi Ray. We looked into that in post #42 (see photos in that post), but most people agreed that it would not be effective due to limited contact area between the coollant and fins. I also didn't notice much of a cooling effect when I ran cold water through hot fins using the heatsink in post #1. Jury is still out though as it seems to be a pretty common method of heat transfer (i.e. car radiator, house heater, etc... but the opposite way -- hot tubes, cool fins).

Well, the Integy fan mount showed up. pffffff..... don't waste your money! I couldn't even tell which direction it was blowing. I guess that's what you can expect from something that runs off the BEC. The mount is nice though. With a good fan, it might do the trick.

Finished the prototype. Decided to go with the completely passive design at first (no fans, etc...). I added holes that match the holes on the endbell for better air circulation. I think I've cranked up the insanity knob with this one. First time using a slitting blade on the mill. Turned out pretty good I think. Going to test it either this weekend or next week at practice.

Another good thing about the cooler is that it comes off real easy so I can still get those endbell temps quickly after the run. Once I'm comfortable with the temps, I'll keep it on to soak up the heat at the end of the run. Gee, I never thought of this, but I hope it doesn't soak all the heat TOWARDS the endbell after the run

Heat rises in that direction sort of... up. Maybe put wires down?
