Where to buy PVC piping for boat stands?

    Hey everyone,

I've been looking (relatively) far and wide for proper PVC tubing to make a few boat stands. I'm just northwest of Toronto and I've been looking in all the standard (Canadian) big boxes for PVC tubing and fittings (Home Depot, Rona, Lowes, Home Hardware and Canadian Tire). All I can seem to find is flimsy yellowish tubing and pricey fittings (elbows and tees) upward of a buck a piece. I don't really mind the price, but that flimsy tubing just doesn't look like it's worth bothering with.

The boat stands I seem to see online are made of more rigid white tubing (schedule 60 I think) which I can seem to find.

I was throwing around the idea to run across the river to Niagara Falls/Buffalo for, among other things, to see if Lowes/Valu/Home Depot in the states sells different stuff (namely the nice rigid white tubing).

Where do you guys get your PVC tubing for boat stands?

        Thanks Jeff,

I had a feeling it was pretty common stuff (well over in the states anyway).

Like I said, the only stuff around here is this flimsy bendable stuff (cpvc). Not sure if it's a trait exclusive to cpvc, but the stuff is just not rigid enough for a boat stand.

          Hi,
You could use ABS tubing to that comes in black,
It should all be in the plumbing stuff at Lowes & Home depot.
May be do a on line order and have it shipped to your store for free.

ABS tubing? All I've ever seen is the white and tan PVC. WHERE did you ever find ABS tubing?

They have it where I said and other plumbing supply stores,
The smallest size I have seen is 1 1/2" in black.http://search.yahoo.com/r/_ylt=A0oG7...ecatalog/N-a9f

I used the 1/2" cpvc for mine, works fine. Once it's cut down and assembled it's pretty rigid, I made one for my 36" Drifter cat and another for my old deep vee.

What diameter pipe are you looking for?

Can't believe you couldn't find what you want at Home Depot.

At first I couldn't believe it either, until I went and actually saw the "selection" they have.

Sometimes it seems that even with all the stores around (and I even mean throughout Toronto - the largest city in the country), that I find better selection if I cross the border and stop in at the nearest 7 eleven.

All the stores (the mainstream ones at least - not the specialized contractor supply stores) sell the exact same stuff. There are a lot of stores, but since they sell all the same items (for essentially the same price), there really is no point. For the record, I stopped in at multiples of the big home improvement box stores around here and it was a joke.

Anyone that's gone shopping in the much less densely populated western New York area and found vastly better selection knows what I mean. There's just no competition up here...for anything. Look at the price of gas. Do you ever drive around and see every gas station at the exact same price right down to the tenth of a cent over in the states? Nope. Here, you can drive all day over hundred of square miles and every price is identical. Nobody seems to care, we just all have come to expect no competition and poor selection. (And not just for PVC pipe - that just happens to be what I'm after right now.)

Enough for my diatribe. I guess it's obvious, but I'm going to hold off until I go cross border. I've waited this long to build these stands, it can wait a bit longer.

I'd really like to end up with some nice rigid stands I can use to carry and stack the boats on.

I looked online and they have the piping on the U.S. Home Depot and Lowes sites and the price is right, so I know one of them will have it.

That's the flimsy tan coloured (Canadian spelling) stuff I mentioned at the start of the thread. If you go to the store, you'll see that the lengths of pipe leaning upright in the stand are not rigid. They are flexible, and at 1/2 to 3/4 they lean there bent like partially cooked spaghetti. Not bad I guess if I wanted to do plumbing with the stuff I guess, but who uses PVC pipe for that? I want to make stuff (relatively rigid stuff) with it!

This is CPVC. I need PVC (white stuff) - far more rigid.

I know they have it in at least some of the Home depots in Toronto (at least the one near Vic Park and the 401) Used to buy a lot of plumbing stuff there before heading to the cottage.
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

Thanks guys, I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but after being to a number of stores recently and not finding it, I sort of gave up hope.

Of course this is compounded by my dislike for battling Toronto traffic.

I can wait until I go over stateside (it's been a while anyway, I'm due) and buy it all there.

Then there's the price...did I mention the price?

Almost ten bucks a length for this unsuitable stuff:
                            http://www.homedepot.ca/product/pvc-...nd-pipe/924365

Versus less than 2 bucks a length for this, much more suitable stuff:

The savings alone, after buying enough for a few stands, could make it worth the trip. From where I live, the border is about 1 1/2 hours. Anyone that's driven in T.O. knows, you can gobble 1 1/2 hours driving between a couple stores. The wife kinda wants to run over sometime too, so I think I'll go that route.

                              Once again....what diameter?

                              Then look here.

This pvc stuff may just look too flexible when it's in long lengths standing on end and bending or "sagging" but it's surely rigid enough for what you want to do I would think.

If none of this stuff is any good to you then I'm afraid I don't understand exacly what you're looking for.

ABS would work for you but I don't know that it can be had at less than 1 1/2" diameter. Too big?

                              Good luck.
