Thanks for the heads up and PM Don , what is the spread on the new 4mm bolt pattern , Have they gone to a 30mm spread and is the outside casing still 40.25mm

You would have to swap out can and both end bells as everything is different. Both motors in pics are brand new as they come out of the box.

The recent changes have caught alot of us by surprise. I recently discovered on the smaller 1512 and 1515 series that Neu changed the shell design as well. It used to be you could unscrew the front shaft side plate and take out the pins or screws at the wire side plate to change out the bearings. Now the latest series is a one piece can. Everything comes out the rear. The front plate is now integral to the outer shell. You can identify those motors by the tapered radius on the front of the motor. Sure caught me by surprise when I did my last bearing replacement. Almost ruined a motor by using my motor clamping jig and putting a lot of force on the lever to spin off the front plate. Glad I didnt learn that one the hard way!

Unannounced changes like this drive me crazy! The new end bells look similar to some of the chinese motors. Maybe Steve Neu is importing the end bells now to save some $$?

That is a bummer Don. Possible suggestions would be to call Neu and ask if they have any older style cans around which they could swap for you. Or possibly check online if someone has a matching style.

Something else I notice is it looks like Neu has gone away from the motor lead wire exiting the can and are now using softer finer strand silicon jacketed wire. Or is that something you changed?

I've gotten used to motors changing over time. It can be a pain. I just try to remember we aren't the primary market for this stuff.

I'm going to guess the new bolt pattern is to mount the gear boxes used in larger aircraft.

6S most likely will be your limit, check boom tube spacing as well to see what you can fit up there for packs.

I've seen the new cans, but didn't realize that drastic change in mounting holes. I'm not at the shop today to check one, Is the can diameter different?

Can diameter is the same BUT the rear end bell mount screws are no longer flush as you can see in the pic. This means on mounts like Peter Zilcha's that support the rear fully (360 degrees) you'll need to notch the mount to clear the screws or slide the rear mount section on from the front all the way down the can, then put on the water jacket followed by reassembling the mount. Unfortunately there really isn't enough "meat" there to tap out the 3mm mounting holes to 4mm or I'd have pulled the end bell and done that last night when I went to mount the motor.

I just got this reply from Jim @ South River where I bought the 1527 1Y from (Steve was out of them) and seems that NEU is changing things. I'm not real happy at the idea of being forced to run sleeved 3mm bolts to make the "new" design fit into existing set ups. Not to mention 4mm bolts are far stronger and I think it odd to even offer 3mm sizing on a motor this big.

I just checked my other 1527s and all the cans are the same (same date of manufacture). Yes, Neu is at it again changing cans sizes.
A work around to consider: The 3mm holes on the motor match up with the holes on the mount. I have longer 3mm screws and combine that with a 4-40 washer and with a bit of 5/32 (3.97mm) brass tube to center the 3mm screws in the holes. It’s not perfect but will solve your issue quickly.
I guess going forward I’ll have to check what I get from Neu.

Just got another NEU 1527 1Y and it's different from the other four 1527's of various configurations (1Y, 1.5Y, etc.) that I have that all were bought this past fall/winter. The motor and box are dated Feb. 7th 2011 so this is not something that's been on the shelf in some dark corner. The mounting pattern has changed big time, the 3 and 4 mm bolt patterns are no longer on the same 1" spread, the 4mm pattern has been spread out further and does not line up with any of my mounts. Also both end bells are different as is the way they attach to the can. While I can deal with the different end bells in the way they attach, the different 4mm bolt pattern is really messing me up, check the pics-
