Turnigy Nano-Tech VS. Thunder Power?

Tony that thunderpower tour was a great read thanks for posting but realisticaly a lot of young boaters absolutely cannot afford them - Wife , kids , bills , etc put a huge damper on the hobby budget . I can see a racer that pushes his cells to the ragged edge the thunderpowers being a great investment or the saws racer looking for every little bit of edge he can muster .

Peter, no doubt that "premium" batteries are somewhat overkill for sport boating. I use budget batteries for fun, but as of this year racing in my district (NAMBA 19) has grown substantially. The two SAWs in L.A. can be accomplished with a budget battery ( I used some GenAce packs at the last SAW) ; most any battery will hold it's nominal voltage when early in their use cycle so that's what I've been using. Also the spec class boats don't put a high demand on the pack(s) so my Spec boats normally use Turnigys or GenAces. For my full-bore P-Mono it's Thunderpower all the way and I'm going into my second season with my TP's in that class.

FWIW , besides my income from rcboatbuild, I have two other part-time jobs, at least half the proceeds of which go into a savings account for batteries at the beginning of each race season. You gotta work hard if you wanna play hard !

A few of us in SoCal FE have just made a bulk purchase of what we hope are high-performance packs from a Chinese supplier that look very promising. I'll disclose the results after they arrive and are put to the test

Hey Tony would you be talking about POWER PLUS batteries? I have heard of a massive factory in China who have recently in the past 6 months developed LIPO Batteries for RC which they believe rival the best.

Power Plus Batteries can be obtained from Shenzhen Tianline Technology Company Ltd. in Guongdong, China. They are made up from Samsung cells. The ones I am getting are not these. I'll disclose more soon - be patient

I havent done any testing between the two brands of packs, but ive have both and can say I wont be buying either again. The nanos always puffed and the Thunder Powers split the hard cases when they swelled and became about 3" thick. I use regular Turnigy packs and have had no problems with them.

I have only used regular Turnigy packs so far with no problems. I have used 1 Thunder Power 2s battery and it also swelled. I have a local dealer in the UK for Power Plus Batteries , has anyone tried them?

Running packs down TOO low will cause anypack to puff. I try not to go more than 65% below rated capacity.

Just my 2 cents here.I'm running Sky's and a set of TP 5000's.After this season(not too many runs),the Sky's take alot longer to balance at the end of the charge.I bought a set of each at the same time so I could monitor and come to a conclusion as they age.

I have had much bettter luck with the regular turnigy packs and the Sky Lipos than the Nanotechs and Thunderpowers. However, that being said, HYPERION's are the ultimate packs that I own. More expensive but last three times longer at least and always balance out.

Yeah, I never run my packs below 3.3V I always use Lipo Protectors.

with FE boats I run them to 70-75% and my 3D planes I run them 75-80%

if that's resting volts, it's very possible you have run them beyond 90-95%
cuz that's only 6.6v for a 2s pack and 9.9v for a 3s pack

Thing is my Turnigy batteries are all fine, and a Seaking Esc is normally set to cut off at 3.3V.

thing is, if your lvc is set to 3.3v then your resting volts is higher
so most any packs would be just fine

So what I get from this....is that my TP packs should not have swelled after about 15 cycles.
