    Insane FE-30

Here's my final build of the winter. It will be a dual purpose P-Spec/P-Sport Hydro. I built it for my son for record oval trials and I'll do a little heat racing with it. The hull quality is top notch. I'm really impressed with the glass work along the seams in in the corners. This is one well built hull. I did however find the floor of the hull a bit too flexible for my liking so I added a layer of CF along the bottom. This did stiffen the bottom up considerably. The Insane hardware is very high quality and is a snap to install. I also like the Insane motor mount and the cool Insane decal. Both items are not on Insane web site so if you decide to build a FE30 and want these items you'll have to ask for them. I mounted the Castle 1515 1Y about 11 inches from the transom to give me the proper cowling clearance for the motor and cooling jacket. After intalling the motor and stuffing tube, I discovered when I pushed the prop end of the stub shaft foward the hull would flex at the aft end of the motor mount causing a misalignment between the stuffing tube and flex shaft. So I made some 6 inch rails out of plywood. They are not very high at just 5/16" Now when I push forward on the shaft now there is absoulutely no flex in the hull between the stuffing tub and motor mount. One final mod I did was to add a pair of cowl keepers to the front of the cowl just in case the tape peels off a bit while running. Motor combo for IMPBA record ovals will be the Castle 1515 1Y with a Turnigy 180. I have a .187 flex in her and will try a M545 and perhaps a ABC 1716. I don't know how hard I can push the T180.

Thanks to Tony "Propperchopper" for his tips!!

Why does your hatch fit so well? Mine does not fit nearly that nice.

A very nice build Mike! Should just scream with the 1515. So the additional rails are just floor stiffeners? Thats what it looks like. I had to do that to my H&M Viper some years ago. I like the cowl keepers! Always good to keep the ole noodle busy thinking.

I agree. My FE seems to gotten a bit worse over the winter months. It flares up right around the front of the cowl. I guess those wood blocks he has put into place are holding it down when he slips the cowl on? Might give that a try.

Actually my hatch fit pretty good from the start. The boat was manufactured last month so maybe changes have been made in the cowl's layup. The cowl keepers are only a precaution just in case the hatch tape starts coming off in a heat.

John, you are correct in that the rails are there only to stiffen the area between the motor mount and the stuffing tube. When I pushed on the prop shaft the hull would flex at the motor mount and the motor would rise slighly. Now it's solid as a rock. I also did this on my sons old Mean Machine. Tony told me the slight flexing hasnt been a problem with other FE30's but I feel better knowing everything is going to stay aligned.

Are my prop selections on the right track??

I really like the M545. A tad of lift, but angling the strut up in the back a bit helps. My first wet with the M545/1515 1Y/ T-180 and a single Turnigy 4S 5000 45C Nano was 68.1 mph - Boat came in dry inside but my shorts had a big wet spot after that run

                  Boat looks great, nice job

The T-180 seems fine in mine; now building the 34" Insane Mono with a
1521 1.5D and a T-180; Mark has run T-180's with even bigger motors. So far, so good.

As I mentioned before ,I also ordered a Epoxy hull for P sport Hydro . The cowl fit much better ,so i ordered a Epoxy cowl for my spec hull. It warped much less and fits better also.
Jeff M told me to keep the cowl taped at the front like it come new . I've been using a rubber band on both of mine when in storage between races . It seems to be working .

I built this wooden jig to hold the hatch in compression flat and squeezed together. I store the hatch in this all the time. It doesn't help much.

A club member has a Castle 1515/1Y in his sport boat (not an Insane) and it would not pull an m545 on 4S1P/4900. The best he could get was 46 mph. Putting on an x442 he hit 55. The amp draw is almost too high for 6 laps plus mill on the 1/6th mile course, he only has 17% left after a heat. The boat runs very freely. OTOH another club member runs a Neu 1515/1Y in a PT SS21 spinning an m545, runs 60+ and uses ~4000 mAh in a heat (4S2P). The Castles are not quite Neus.
