think you forgot to see where he is "overdriving" it with a tranny.... 2 to 1... so:Originally posted by JeepersI think you need to do the math again.
2200kv X 8.4v (2s charged) = 18480 unloaded rpm X 2 (overdriven trans) = 36960rpm unloaded..... so jeepers I think he is right on....
ha ha.... I think you realized it after your post jeepers...LMAO... :)

Boat hit the water today at the 2-Lap Time Trial event, hosted by Pugest Sound Model Boat Club. Seemed to go really well right off the bench.
First two attempts looked promising, but the lake was full of leaves, debris, etc... and I got leaves caught on the rudder, severly slowing the run.
On the third attempt, I had made some adjustments to the prop height and balance, and it was a LOT faster... so much so, that on the second lap, I actually blew the boat off the water! An N1 Mono, BLEW off the WATER!!
At this point, I think I'm on the right track!
The flip broke the carbon rudder, so I had to make-shift a new rudder system using a wedge rudder I had. This slowed the boat WAY down.
Made another rudder change, and went back out... Managed to get two clean laps, and a NEW N1 Mono 2-Lap Record!! My record from February was 53.06... New record is 49.75!!
I tried one more time, this time using a much more prop, but again, I got leaves caught up on the rudder in the final 1/3rd of the 2nd lap, and it finished, but then melted the solder off of one of the motor leads... Motor was still 161-degrees about 3-minutes after getting the boat back in to the bench., so I didn't make any more attempts.
Next step: Boat needs strakes added, trim tabs, and a new rudder assembly. Otherwise, I think it's pretty good.Attached FilesDarin E. Jordan - Renton, WA

Sounds like you had a great time out there, congrats on the record!
Did the trans seem to give you a lot more?
Don't heat the puppy up much more than 161 though bud..
They roast winds qicker than you would like. Its a fine line as well.
Novak advised me to start pullin' heat out of it After the run.
Windings usually burn when its sitting after the run. Believe it or not, during heavy testing, I'll hold the boat up to the ac vent on my truck
to cool it, but a fan or ice pack will suffice..
I've burned up four 17.5 motors so far : )Last edited by BILL OXIDEAN; 11-07-2010, 12:44 AM.

Bill... Honestly, I think that these motors all have a limited amount of power to give, and the difference between gearing and not gearing is really just two different ways to lay down the same power.Originally posted by BILL OXIDEAN View PostSounds like you had a great time out there, congrats on the record!

That being said, the gears do let you use props that these smaller hulls are much happier with. Minus the crap hanging up on the rudder, the boat looked like an old-school N2-Mono... I do think there is more there. Might need to add water cooling and play around with a few other things.
I'd rather run it straight up if I could get the prop speed, but as it stands, the gears are a good option.Darin E. Jordan - Renton, WA

You'll be in love with the kinetic then.
Suddenly you can run the pup direct drive and have some fairly robust power.
A 435x2 runs great, and you can actually get away with a 432 direct drive if that gives you an idea..
I still can't help but wonder if an overdrive would optimize things with the kinetic..

The run where I got the record, which is the only one where I didn't encounter crap on the rudder, the temps were only 125-130, without any water cooling. Mah used was only 550mah in both the Hydro and the Mono... The over 161 temp was because I had a much larger prop on it that run and the additional leaves on the rudder was just too much...Originally posted by BILL OXIDEAN View PostDon't heat the puppy up much more than 161 though bud..

Sounds like you were in the correct powerband range.
Good stuff..

that was I believe a 435x3
notice that fierce unwind when the prop comes out of the water?
the problem is that only so much is usable. if you try to prop down to utilize it the powerband flattens out..
