A cover/cap with water entry slots would work. The "cap" would fill up with water, then pop off when the prop engages and pushes it away. you could even put a tether on it. This is such a great idea! Now switch that motor to a super tiny brushless to save weight!

Yeah, I think I mentioned earlier in the thread......I keep launching her upside down to test the system. I can almost feel the heads shaking in the background. Seriously though, there's nothing like having a blow over and then just casually driving her back in.

Hooked up Freddy with a system. Seems to be working well (vid attached)! A little too rough for hydros that day for sure. Yikes! Those Vegas hulls take a beating.

(2) more in production...... Learning more and more with each revision. Freddy suggested putting the brains on the side of the cowl. Any water in the hull ends up running to the top of the cowl when upside down. The turbine in the cowl acts like a sump and keeps the water from soaking the brains. Good idea.Attached Files

Finally done. They are no match for Phil's original cowls, but they seem to do the trick and allow the system to be packaged easier.Attached Files

I think you have done a great job. I have added a new twist that permits you to control the throttle in the inverted boat (upside down) position for your "Get Home" motor. This way you need only need a two channel radio and none of the switching complications with the third channel you mention.Originally posted by teach View PostIs there any way to make use of the third channel most radio/receivers have?
I designed a smart switching electronics module that "Knows" which ESC to control from your throttle based on boat orientation, UP or INVERTED. It accepts ANY type of receiver ESC combination so you can mix and match bushless for the main drive and brushed for the get home motor if you want.
To use this smart module you simply velcro it in the boat with the UP logo in the upward position. (Female, fuzzy velcro is on the bottom of the module already). One line goes to your receiver and the other two are connected to your respective speed controllers. UP for the normal drive motor and INV for your "Get Home" motor.
If you really think about it, there is much more to this concept than just a "Get Home" application and that is really what I am now working on. As they say, think out of the box on this one.
The module is totally sealed so can work fully submerged. It weighs about 10 grams or 0.5 ounces including all connectors. Dimensions about 1" dia and 3/4" thick.
It may be possible that I could also include the ability to reverse the steering when the boat is upside down but that is not so important now. If I did this you would control your boat in the inverted or up-side-down EXACTLY the same way it would be controlled in the normal position. (With any 2-channel radio)
Pics of the module included. You can see how I have it connected to a 2.4 receiver, a small, orange brushed ESC and a T-180 ESC.
I hope it continues to generate interest in this innovative thread you have started!

1. BEC no problem, that does not make any differenceOriginally posted by Boaterguy View Posttwo things,
1. will it let a BEC go through?
2. make a cylindrical boat (with a nose cone of course) and put 4 motors on it, any of the two would be in the water at a time, you just need a way to make it work sideways too.
2. I will leave the cylindrical boat up to you! That said, making it work at 90 degrees is not really a problem.

No, the way it has been designed is that when the boat is in the normal, upright position the UP ESC is operational (plus or minus about 20 degrees or so ). When the boat is inverted, again about plus or minus 20 degrees the INV ESC is operational.Originally posted by Boaterguy View Postso it works for both escs at 90 dgrees?
I can, at a later date design a module that would work for 4 ESC's each 90 degrees apart but that is NOT this module. This is designed to work only with two ESC,s and at approximate 180 degree rotations.
Hope this makes sense.
