OK, ready to let it cure a few days and then start the mounting process! No hurry, as I ordered the HK500 red motors Ray mentioned earlier in the thread and they won't be here for another week I'm sure.

I've seen the blue like the red you used, and I didn't know how well it would work, but looks like I may try that stuff out now..

I used a 3m green "scrunge" to prep the gel coat and it worked out well. I laid on about 6 coats, wet sanded, decaled and then another 2 coats... one fogging and one final "wet" coat. 1500grit wet or dry.

2-3 coats of color and the rest clear/clear effex/clear. The effex looks good over the decals.

I let it bake in the Florida sun for a few hours to cure.

Did you lay any primer? Or gelcoat adhesion? Was that Duplicolor a Poly Eurethane? If not... I may have some bad news for you Ben. Poly is the only thing that will stick permanently to Gel w/ out and epoxy base primer first. My info is based on 17 years of spraying boats, trial and error of every paint under the sun and a good family friend owns a body shop.. another a boat restoration shop. I hope you have no problems.... Only tape will tell. Or one good blow over.

Suprisingly Ive been EXTREMELY successful w/ the ACE brand Appliance Epoxy Paint. I use the white. I tested it it a few years back on a gasser and beat the snot out of it. I could not get it to chip. Then I used it on the bottom of one of my FE cats and its the only thing that still looks good. Once its down, a good scuffing and anything will stick to it. I now cover all my boats w/ it before applying paint. I did run into an issue on my HOTR. I used Duplicolr over Rustoleum, as the parts store I was at was out of Duplicolr filler primer. Guess what.. the Silver is peeling from the Primer in a couple spots where tape lays down. But... the primer is LOCKED to the epoxy. I beat on it trignt to give me a reason to strip it and re-do it and it will not come off.

You may get lucky.. it depends how much the gelcoat "releases". And how much the paint bit the gel. Gelcoat is such that once scuffed, it has to be painted fairly soon as it releases .. kinda like a wax.. but its not wax.. I dont know the technical term, but it comes back up to the surface and makes adhesion nearly impossible. If it does that enough after youve painted.. the paint will literally peal right off the boat.. like it was taped on. I have seen some people get lucky and it stuck. Ive never been that lucky.

ACE Appliance paint. That makes sense, appliances take a good beating.

I scuffed it and laid the paint within minutes and coat after coat the same day. Well, you've seen the thread... Letting it bake in the sun should have helped too...

So I guess fingers crossed and careful taping!

How did you fit your motors in this boat? The clearance above the sponsons is small. Like 38mm.

I'm sure I can bend the hull a bit... but... not sure how much.

I used to use an Epoxy paint from a body shop supply store. But it was like 35 bux a can. I experimented w/ 7 dollar Ace Epoxy and had the same results.

My HOTR was started by someone else. Look at the beginning of my build thread and you will see. Where the motors go, the part of the deck that goes down to the lip that holds the hatch from falling in was almost completely cut away. If that wasnt like that, I would have had to do the same thing.. However, I woulda cut a little less as it made that part of the deck very flimsy. I backed it w/ 5.7 carbon but it still flexes a bit.

Yeah, the final wet coat came out very rich, deep and very smooth. I almost had a run, but was able to move the hull around and let the paint level out.

It was out in the FL sun about 6 hours today after this mornings final coat. It's now on the shelf for a few days to "cure".

Just an update, the paint did chip off where the hatch/hull meet. :headslap:

It's only where they rubbed tightly and I was able to sand it down and clear over the chipped areas. So we'll see. At least it's sealed for now.

4.3ft catamaran plug.



ive built this hull just for fun and decided to go all the way with it...(engine and electronics)..im having a hard time finding a suitable prop size and engine for it...i wanna go nitro/gas but also i wanna see if it can run on brushless...its at home to be filled and primer so i can make a mold out of it in fiberglass...can anyone give some suggestions?...it would be pretty much appreciated...thanks!!! nice boat anyway and sorry to cut-in the topic...
