I tape to attach my sponsons, using tape to secure boom tubes is the easiest thing ever, very cheap, very light, and is the only method that does not weaken the boom tube (although if you use solid rod not tube for booms the clamps probably don't weaken it either).

All you have to do is when you are building the boat cut the boom tubes an inch and a half wider than the tub and leave 3/4" sticking out each side, then bevel the inside edges of each end slightly with your modelling knife or countersinking bit, so they do not create sharp stress rising contact points when the boom flexes just as you would normally. You then wrap tape around the exposed (brass?) boom tube and walk it off the end of the (brass?) tube onto the (carbon?) boom in spiral fashion keeping the tape pulled tight so that it goes straight from touching the (brass?) to touching the (carbon?) without a gap (you need flexible tape for this, I use the Cellpack#128 clear insulating tape that I use for curved hatches.) and keep spiralling out for approximately the same length as you have boom tube sticking out .

I think I was at 2.3kg RTR with 6XL, Skywing 200A ESC and 4s 5800mAh LiPo.

I have 4 extra clamps. I could use those. For those of you who use the clamps, do you cut slits in the outer brass sleeve to get them to clamp better?

Also, is it better to have a reasonably breakable rod/tube/boom than a really strong one like the solid CF rod I have? I'm concerned that a super strong and rigid rod will cause damage to the tub before breaking themselves.

I prefer my riggers with sponson booms to have some moderate give or flex. I cant speak for all racers but from all that I have read SAW racers like the sponsons to be break away so that the main body decelerates rapidly and doesnt get beat up or punctured by the remaining attached fragments if there are any.

I only used the boom clamps up against the tub on my JAE (used bolts and nuts on the sponson brass tubes). I am using the solid CF booms and I have had both solid booms shear completely off at the clamps on the sides of the tub with no damage to the tub itself. I definately think that the clamps saved the day by giving the booms a place to shear off at. Use the clamps and the solid CF booms...trust me...you will be fine...

New Fiberglas TUB JAE worked great.

Ran my new JAE yesterday. The new fiberglass Tub version worked great. Set it up the same as my sheet built version and did not even need to trim. Did some back to back testing with a mild setup H7 /UL1 motor to get some data on the NanoTech battery vs the standard 40C turnigy. Very Happy with the new Fiberglass tub. Used one of Jim M. new struts this time. He has added a plate to distribute the load on the transom eliminating any flex inherent with the stock Zipp strut.

I laid it up but Mark Anderson built the mold. Our intent was to get interest up in racing the spec class in NAMBA District 8 was to make several and sell them at the cost of materials. So far we only have the two of them out of the mold. But it sure saves on tape with the three hatches.

We are not looking to sell them outside District 8 . We are only doing this to get more people to race with. Sorry we have not figured out pricing yet, when we do it will only be open to NAMBA 8 members. We have no desire to compete with manufactures that do this to make money .

i understand, i own several jae's and one of them needs a new tub right now and i love the idea of a fiberglass one. what does it take to join dist 8? lol

I do have a tub built and painted it is one of the ones I made with vacuum bagged carbon fiber over light ply for the sides. It does not have the stuffing box or ski attached yet. I was working on that when Mark came up with the molds so I did not finish it. It was going to be my new boat. It was the original one that I built with three hatches I did that to save on tape. If you are interested in finishing that one I could let it go . Make me an offer.

How much distance do you JAE owners have between the sponsons and the tub? I measured mine and have 7 3/8" Does that sound about right?

Hi guys I saw people asking about the outer clamps and how to make them work, I do a double I.D. clamp with a 8mm main hole drilled thru, then i take an 11/32 end mill and run it half way thru the clamp making it bite to both surfaces of the brass and carbon. I make and sell these as well @ 20.00 a set. W e have found during testing that these will save your boat if you hit a bouy- being not drilled carbon they are not weakened at all and will not break but all the force of inpact will simply slide the clamp and push your sponson outward and not breaking anything.

That sounds about right. I buy the 40" booms, cut them in half, center the tub with the sponsons as wide as they can go with the carbon just to the outside edge of the sponsons. I asked Rod G when I first built my boat and he pointed out that it is not a critical measurement. What is critical is that the sponsons are absolutely parallel to the tub
