I am trying to decide 36 mm or 40 mm motor. I am shooting for mid 50s to 60 mph. Thinking of keeping it light? We don't race NAMBA. A friend lives on a lake with a private beach. Our course is about 2/3 NAMBA size.

Good goal speed with that boat. I had one and found it gets a little loose over 60mph. Not that it can't be done... it'll just stay upright better at under 60.
You can obtain those goals with a 36mm motor. Just need to stay above 60mm length.

This would be a good motor to obtain your goals. It is a standard 68mm motor that's been custom reduced to 61.5mm and would make a nice fit in the small space leaving a little additional room for the esc and batteries verses a 68mm to 74mm long motor. Pair this with a 47mm prop and you'd be in that speed range.

Balance

I think I read somewhere to keep the weight forward. I am working from and empty hull. I was thinking front to back, battery, motor, esc, servo.
Any advise?

A couple people said balance 1 1/2" behind the sponson. I balanced there it handles great. With a Y536 prop it loafed along at 53 mph. Like on rails even with chop and small wakes from other boats. Tried a M445 and it ran 62 mph. I ran full throttle about 6 laps and fried the motor. Handling was still rock solid. Acts like it wants to go faster. Going to toss the HK 3674-1650 and drop in a TP 3650-1550.
