Shipping to Canada

Well, most of the time. Sometimes customs takes it easy on us, and lets the odd thing through. That's what happened with my SV27 straight from Tower Hobbies. The little Canada Post truck pulled up, they gave me the boat, had me sign and that was it. No duty at all.

Don't get me wrong. I have no problem paying duty. It's usually a trivial amount anyway, it's those fees from the couriers that ruin my day.

Oh yeah, then there was that guy baldwinc that sold me a boat here in the swap shop (for $180) then put the value at $400 on the declaration form. I guess he thought it was a value for insurance (which he had not purchased). I got nailed for over $100 picking it up (at the post office - so that was almost all duty). Not a good day.

That's where all my big ticket items go. It's free to set up with them. Charge is $5 per package (under 50lbs) for the first 10 days, then they charge a $2 storage fee per package per week.

As said above, for the cost of time and gas, you can drive to the brokerage office where your package is held, and clear it yourself. You still pay the taxes, but UPS does not charge the fee since they didn't clear it.

Personally I have no problems paying the taxes either. I'd have to pay them if I bought something locally anyhow, so that doesn't bother me. As others have pointed out, it's the brokerage I don't like paying. At least USPS it's only $5.

And you trusted the buyer who was in another country to give you an accurate quote because........?

You should still always get your own shipping quote to confirm.

Absolutely agree. That's why when I purchase stuff from US I always offer to pay up the DIFFERENCE in shipping cost. Not suddenly pay a full amount for shipping, just whatever extra it costs over the included shipping price within the CONUS

If it is anything big like a boat or heli, I always pay the difference to have it shipped to Canada. Unless I have them shipped to WA state.

Did you let the buyer know? I have had this happen to me before with a U.S. transaction. The seller let me know and I was happy to pay the difference. Please don't let this bad example stop you from future transactions with Canadians. USPS has great rates compared to Canada Post and I am always happy to pay the shipping cost. The only reason I always ask a seller for shipping price to Canada is because they sometimes charge insane amount for handling.

Why? I don't see a reason to end it. There is no bashing and it is informative. Why not help other members both Canadian and American's. This thread could help with closing the deal with both sellers and buyers.
