If you run in brackish or salt water you do need to clean it out. Salt water corrodes much worse than freshwater. Like stated above, native Paul beat me to it, if the shaft is polished it does not corrode near as easy. But taking it apart after running it and cleaning and regreasing is normal maintenance anyways.

Yes, I also treated everything with WD-40 as it's easy to apply and all the preventive measures mentioned above. But I've never tried auto fluid and kerosene. . .it's inexpensive and effective. I definitely will give it a try. Is there a mixture ratio? Nice to learn something new all the time. . .thanks Ronald.

if you have a plastic cylinder [ plumbers pipe ] about 2 inches in diameter and say 3 foot long you don,t need alot of the liquid to fill this up and the mix would be 50 - 50 or whatever. actually wd-40 is a mix of kero and oil.

thanks and that's funny that WD-40 is a mix of kerosine and oil. . .I guess I should start reading what is in something or better yet the manual for the things I buy. .LOL.

WD-40 took about 4 years to develop. The name, Water Displacement -40, with the “40” meaning it was the 40th recipe that yielded great results. It ain’t no simple mix!

I saw a show on the top 50 patents once, and WD-40 was on there... yeah, right back at ya! Ignorance is bliss, just keep telling yourself that, lol!
