2 hardcase packs swelled on me today

3rd test on boat got all plumbing leaks fixed ran 3mins seen power drop suddenly brought in motor was cool esc cool batts cool but both popped plastic case swelled ? they were old matched packs was running them in series to make a 4s motor is a 4074 1800kv with 180esc running x447 3bld don't think I overworked anything packs were prolly just on last leg no heat just swelled kinda freaked me out though

Hhhhmmmm, even a 447/3 is still a relatively light load for a 4074 on 2s x 2 series. I've seen this several times before, but every time it was from fng's running sub 30c cells to ave $ ie: 15-20c.

Had a set of near new fully charged 45-90c Turnigy Nano-Techs fail to deliver the amps. They didn't swell, or over heat, but the motor would reach high RPM, then cut back, (rinse, and repeat).
They DID work for about 20 runz, but now I can only use them in vehicles that pull less than 70amps. Popped in a set of OLD 35c Hyperions and I was running at full throttle once again
Me thinks the C rating on some lesser expensive batteries is over inflated.

dont think the motor i have should realy be a amp guzzler that blowes my mind as well as just plain blowing losing packs at least no fire or heat

It's a 25C pack. Why not try something like 45C-65C packs? 5000 65C Nano

32" mono, or cat? Sport, speed runz, or oval? The weight of the boat can also be a factor. I have 2, 32" mono's, nearly the same motors, and 2100kv in each, running on 4s. one is my 7 pound, shallow vee speedster. the other is a 13 pound, deep vee, sport running show boat. Need I tell you which boat has a 100amp larger ESC, with extra cooling plate, and 3 more water pick-ups, and why? Close in sport running can really pull some amps, also heat things up quick. I don't imagine the set-up you describe would burst at more than 160amps. And if your burst's are only coming out of an oval turn, a *quality* 25c battery *might* be enough. Personally, I would not go less than 35c with your boat, and 45c with the Turnigy's. Like I posted above, My 45c Nano-Tech's failed to deliver the amps needed for a 120amp max buggy. Though admittedly, the amp draw in a buggy is much more a constant. Have you given any thought to going 5s ? 32000rpm unloaded, and some different props might work better for you.

I think im starting to understand why people don't flog into throttle now when I watch videos guessing now cause of sudden currant draw. gonna have to break myself of that . been running gas for along time takes me awhile but I think im learning this boat is a whole different animal than the sv27 I had then pusuit handles so much better and is a real boat not toy grade

the only way its ok to nail it from the get go is if you have overdone everything...motor, esc, wires, batteries and have a noice cap bank on it. I hit mine alot from a dead stop because i like wheelies but i have kinda calmed down with that because while its cool to watch, it not cool to have to retrive a flipped boat lol.

couple things for you....

1) if you have a hard pack that has those little 3mm plug in's.....its not going to get all the amps the pack is rated for and it will melt the hard cases. been there. i ended up removing the hard cases and putting 6mm bullets on the little short piece of wire and made the packs still have interchangeable plugs.

2) my rule of thumb (again this is mine) I WILL NOT use a pack that is rated less than 50c in boat. period.

3) make sure you have 10ga or bigger wire on everything. Of course, the motor usually wont be that big, but its three wires.

4) make sure you use a high amp connector. back to the hard pack plugs....does no good to use a 6.5mm bullet at the esc connection when you have a 3mm plugging into the hard case does it? lol

What you described is exactly how old packs fail. Every pack I've retired failed this way. As the cells age the IR goes up, the capacity decreases, and they puff.
