Water pickup questions...

I wasn't fond of the rudder pickup on my genesis, so I got some 5/32 brass tube and a clamp for it and put it on the transom next to the rudder mount. How deep do I want it? Level with bottom of hull?

I really wasn't getting too good of water flow out of the outlet.
