    wire drive

I have spent countless hours now trying to figure out how to setup a wire driven system for my 20 inch mono, so far i went out and bought 1/16 wire and some 1/8 stanless steel rods and some 1/8 brass and a couple of bigger sizes to telescope with my question is do i run the 1/8 brass to a little bit larger size brass to acomadate the 1/8 stainless rod for the prop and thats it if i not going to run it to a strut just straight out of the back of the boat? Also on the motor end do I get a coupler to fit the 1/16 wire and thats it? any help or pictures would be great thanks.

Just use 3/32 brass and then slide the next size and then 1/8". This is your stub. You do not need the other shaft. That was the way they were frst built. You can also cut a small groove in the brass so your drive dog set screw locks on to the wire.

So use the 3/32 brass at the end of the boat sodered to the 1/8 tube so the 1/8 stanless steel will have a housing to roatate in.

BAsically you are just sliding the tubes over the wire until you get up to 1/8" If your last piece is SS tubing then fine. I use Loctite instead of soldering. Slide the wire alll the ay inside your tubing to the end of the tubing. Your props shaft should end up being the same as what is currently used in the strut. Octura are 2.25" I also make them shorter...depends on the length of your strut.

Very simple and efective...not to mention cheap and works. We used brass only over .062 wire.

thanks for the info but if i am not planning to use a strut just run the brass all the way out of the back will this work and if its going out the back woulfd three inches be far enought out.

Sure you can use a larger tube for the out drive. I would beef it up a bit with a larger size to make it solid. Brass on brass is ok but you may see some early wear...it will be fine for some time just keep it lubed. I would get some teflon bushing for the stub to ride in if it were me but if you run SS on the brass you will be fine.

Also epoxy the stuffing tube inside the hull very well so it does not move. 3" is fine for a mono. Make sure your rudder leading edge is equal to or behind the prop or you will get air at the prop when turning.

I like the SV strut for this style. You can cut them to the length you need and shove a bushing in it. Make sure you tube where it exits is level to the hull bottom. Even a slight neg angle is ok. 1/2 of the prop should be running under the hull (in the water) for a decent surface drive.

Yes...not sure the 1/8" is on my site but I have them. Why not run a step down shaft and .150 cable...or wire? Musch more sturdy for larger power like 12 cell or 4s.

only planing on running a 6 cell with a 17 turn motor for now until i can get sum bucks in the wallet, was try to make a wire drive cause it sounded simple and cost effective for now instead of a straight shaft its going in a homemade wild thing mono thats only 20ins tried to put a ep1 on it and all it did was flip was kinda fun to drive but swimming for it all the time wasn't worth the effort so now i thought i would setup a simple home made rutter and hard ware system.
