question for you paint guys,,,,,
Im not up on my paint knowledge. I'm getting ready to paint a hull. My question is if I can use waterborne paint as a base and accents then clear with a 2k clear coat? I don't mind using oil base paints. It would be easier for me to use waterborne paints for most of my airbrushing. As I only have one brush and it's easier to clean than solvent base. (and it doesn't penetrate into the house from the garage as much- upsets the other occupant of the house ). From what I know it's fine to paint over oil with water but not the other way, right? But I don't know about clear coating. And if I can't what would I use for clear over waterborne? For the clear I would like to stay with a rattle can. The 2k clear I use is spraymax 2k, I've used it before and I like it for my limited use and knowledge.

Hey I found the data sheet for spraymax and it says it can be used for solvent and waterborne so I guess Ive proven that I am capable of learning on my own,,,,, but I still value anyone's comments. Thanks. -

waterbourne is fine to go over anything really.
when you say oil, what were you planning on using?
automotive colors are enamal based , waterbourne and lacquers
clearcoats can be enamal, lacquer, urethane, and sometimes waterbourne.

Figure of speech , solvent base not oil. Anyway I figured it out. I'm using hok waterbase then using clear urethane 2k. Was doing alot of color changes and I don't have a limited window for multiple coats using hokComment

I haven't had any issues with my clear over the waterbase.I just have issues with waterbase sticking to other paint.Comment

Oops I'm sorry, was thinking of something else, I'm using createx auto air and wicked colors. Not house of color paint. And yes the spraymax 2 part clear urethane is the clear coat I'm going to be using. One thing I did realize I that I didn't use a base sealer. I'm still learning and it is the first "real " paint job I've done. I used a high build primer. Several coats. Didn't scuff surface enough and didn't use the base sealer recommended. Some spots lifted when taped so hull got striped and supplies ordered. All n the learning curve. Kind of hard for a ignorant sap like myself to know all the steps first go around. :) as with most of my stuff it should turn out good when done just a few more steps forward and several backwards to get there!!!!Originally posted by Cooper View PostComment

I "later" realized I needed to add a base sealer first coat to promote adhesion for first coat. Urethane is two parts. Like epoxy
Cooper, sealer really isn't necessary, it's more for things like, burn throughs or color. Ex would be a bright red, if you go over white it will look different than if you go over gray. Most colors aren't so transparent as red so you can get away without sealer. Keep in mind the more crap you put on, the more chances for failure. Primer isn't needed on gelcoat btwComment

Yes I agree, I now know more than when I primed the hull. I am almost done with removing the paint and primer coat. Proof of ignorance- I thought I was doing good, now realize like you said more things to go wrong. Well on the right track now.
