Mould making resin question

I plan to do the canopy layup in epoxy resin but is it OK to use polyester resin for making a one off mould?
Much cheaper than West epoxy for something that will more than likely be used once.
Next question do I have to use tooling resin or is gel coat good enough for one time use, is that even required? Can I just polish and wax then PVA the plain resin?
Found plenty of info about making the plug and mould but not to much about the minimum requirements for a single use.

Sure is ok
in fact, most, if not all moulds are usually polyester resin based.
... i dont like gelcoat...

Dont need gel coat, brush on a coat of resin let it setup a bit till it gels then you can lay on cloth and more resin to make your mold. You can polish the resin if needed.
