Wish there was something like this around here! Just made a bunch of tuning runs yesterday with my UL-1 powered Drifter S. Went like stink right off the bench and just kept getting faster. Peaks of 109 amps on the UL-1 motor and esc! No smoke! This speed thing is way different, but so exciting. Couple passes I could feel the knees begin to shake and was putting the body english into the run!
Looks like great fun with some awesome drivers/builders. 'Cept I probably would have burst into flames or something equally biblical. Thats kinda freaky!
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

Actually I tried some P-Ltd Offshore rigged runs with my Drifter S (UL-1 powered) SAW record holder; went quickly in the straights but lost it in the corners. Back on the shelf 'till the October SAWs

        More Vids

        Brian's P-Hydro test run

Tyler's Big Sport Hydro (can't remember if it was Q, S, or T) ; el stuffo & broke motor mount loose.

Brian's test run with the P-Ltd Hydro with a ballon hit

Top lap times are set by getting as close to the course marker buoys as possible - lane 1 is the shortest distance around the course.

        Overheard in the pits :

Tyler to Tom Cinquegrani (after Tom got a record in gasser mono) : So Tom, how many balloons did you nail in your attempts ?

        Tom : One

Tyler : You're not trying hard enough !

That location looks really nice. That driver's stand looks super nice. Is this a club location/lake?

Not sure what you mean by "club location lake". Legg Lake is a county (of L.A.) park, but the model boating area is designated for boaters who are NAMBA members (membership includes liability insurance). With NAMBA membership and a yearly key fee, we suffer the hardships of a private entrance and lakeside parking, a beautiful driver's stand (with 110 volt access) and launch area, locked rescue/rowboat storage and ample shady pit/setup area. The local clubs, Amigos, H20 Gassers and SoCal FE call this home turf. Oh, the sacrifices we have to make !

Precise endpoint adjustment and QUICK rate. Hit your marks then TURN. Smart radio setup helps lots (stick radio)...along with a great handling boat.

Zooming in on the prop. Tony, next time get a better picture of the prop. Looks like an Octura with a little cup added?

                            Jim, it's 1/6th.

Pretty much all record courses these days are, since it's the standard for Nitro, and since FE added it a few years back.

A great weekend as always. Great site, great people. Kim made me fat again (I can't help myself, 3 days= 5 pounds guaranteed). Mark and Tyler, my partners in crime (enough said).

Tony, thanks for shooting the video, it's cool to be able to watch the run later. I find I'm my own harshest critic, there's another half second there if I'd just tightened up the driving a bit.

That little boat is serious fun to drive. Can't wait to get the big one done. Mark radar-ed it at 76mph on the third lap closer to shore.

                              Shameless plug time:
Castle Creations motor and ESC, Grimracer Speed Packs, Futaba radio gear. Thanks for years of support, I couldn't do this without the parts you guys make.

                              Grim,
I was running my trusty old 3VCS, I don't have enough time on the new 8J to have the same feel for it. I really like the 8J, just doing a bit more fine tuning to get it where I want it. Think of it as the new vs. comfy old workout shoes analogy. One last blast with the old pair.

                              Detox,
That's an ABC on the back of the boat.

Funny thing about radio setups, people really overlook that part of the game. I like very strong but relatively slow servos on steering, I don't really like slowing them down in the software (just me being stubborn probably). Overbuilt linkage using as much of the servos range as I can is a good thing. The whole trick is using all the resolution while only creating as much physical movement as needed. I set my boats up so that I can run a complete arc just inside the bouys with the stick all the way over. If the end point adjustment is below 80% to run that arc, the mechanical linkage needs to be changed.

No wheel radios for me, I find I can drive more precisely with a stick. 3VCS, 3GR and now I'm working with the new 8J. I think you'll find most of the very fast guys running sticks.

Thanks for the great tips Brian. Been wondering about the endpoint - corner arch thing - that really clears it up.

I guess the TX choice is a what you are comfortable with thing. When I started racing 1/10th scale off-road buggies & trucks in the 70s I used pistol grip radios, so that's what I'm comfortable with. When I started flying I had to learn how to use stick TX'es and am comfortable flying 3D with them. But for things on the ground/water - except sailboats - I still prefer a pistol grip.

Look forward to seeing you again at Legg Lake. JIM
