Just curious as to what everybody uses for collets, what the best brand/type would be? On my Daytona Cat i have a long Octura 2pc unit but i don't think it is perfectly true. Octura makes good stuff so it's probably fine. I was thinking about ordering another collet just for grins and giggles, but are any of them perfectly true? How about the 3pc units? Like i said, just curious, looking for a little knowledge!
Best Collets?

I like the small 2pc. stainless collet from Kintec (right). Be sure to tighten well. The Aluminum Jeff Wholt collet (left) is true and lightweight, but more diffucult to use. Octura (center). All in picture are 8mm x 3/16" size.Attached FilesLast edited by detox; 04-03-2012, 07:15 AM.

The 5mm to 3/16 Collets Jan at Kintec sells are top notch. I have been using them for a while. You can tighten them right up and when you want to looses just give it a tap with the spanner as you are unscrewing. Works every time. The idea of a replaceable insert is good too just incase you wear it out but I have never had Kintecs wear out. The 3 piece Hobbyking sell wear easy.Everything that has a beginning, has an End

I am partial to the stainless mentioned above.I got mine from FC but they are the same I believe.I've got a three piece in my mono and it is working well,it hasn't jammed up on me yet.The only one I've had an issue with is the short Octura in the MG.It snapped in half while tightening once.

A tip - lubricate the threads and cone surface of collet-type couplers with a small amount of Never-Seez. This will give you substantially more clamping force on the cable with the same amount of wrench torque. Or, less torque for the same amount of clamping. Helps in keeping the cable from slipping or from being lost.

Yup, good tip, i'll have to pick some of that up too!!Originally posted by Fluid View PostA tip - lubricate the threads and cone surface of collet-type couplers with a small amount of Never-Seez. I have one of the 3pc 5mm-3/16 in another boat, i'd like to try that on the Daytona but it's seized right to the motor shaft! I've sprayed the heack out of it with PB blaster and WD40 but it just doesn't want to pop loose. I am a little bit worried about over-tightening the 3pc and getting the flex jammed up, that's why i kinda perfer the 2pc.

Jason, you're a CNC machinist so you probably have tried all this: holding the motor in your hand...................
1. Slip a claw hammer under the collet and GENTLY pry it loose
2. Tap the collet GENTLY with a small ball peen hammer, repeat #1
3. Use a butane toarch to heat up the collet & immediately dunk it (not the motor) in a container of ice cold water, then repeat #1
Once you get it off, toss the 3 piece collet in the trash can and use a 2 piece collet, pre lubed with Never Seez like Jay said.Last edited by JIM MARCUM; 04-03-2012, 05:44 PM.JIM MARCUM: NAMBA 777; EX? Yeah i basically tried 1 & 2. I don't run the boat any more (never ran right, handled like a dump truck) so i just put it on a shelf and moved on. I haven't touched it in a couple years. All i did was tried to pry it with a pair of screw drivers from both sides to somewhat equal out the pressure and not bend the motor shaft, plus lightly tapping on it, didn't budge. I thought some PB blaster would help free it but nope. I also thought about heating it up, that would probably do it, but like you said i'm probably not gonna use a 3pc anyways, it was just a idea.Originally posted by JIM MARCUM View PostJason, you're a CNC machinist so you probably have tried all this: holding the motor in your hand...................

Use a dremel with a cut-off wheel. Tape end of motor so no crap get in and go gentle. Wear a face mask and goggles. Now every so often , dip collet in cold water. Now it may take several cut-off wheels. Now if you have a big lighted maginfing glass , sure would help.

I could use some collet help.
I bought a used NEU motor with a 2.3 mm shaft. I had no idea it would be so hard to find a collet that I could use. Im running a 0.098 flex shaft.
I was planning on using this:
http://www.etti.com.hk/product_info....products_id=48
I was then going to mill out the 1.2mm end to a 2.5mm (0.098) for the flex shaft.
I like the dual collet idea, because the 2.3 mm shaft is small, filing off a flat concerns me.
Would it be better to make a stainless steel shaft shim to go from 2.3mm to somthing more reasonable like 3.2 MM?
Should I just order a custom one from Jeff Wholt?
Thanks!!Cheetah, Super Rio, (Mod) Starship (Mod and sold),

Not sure who else has the same collet as Ben over at fightercat but I have his and I like it better then all the others so far just by the way it grabbed the cable.CF Fightercat Daytona, 21 year old Hitec Sea Nymph, Genesis and many more to come im sure.
