Got a New Boat for my 1 year Anniversary - few questions

My recommendations were based on lowest cost, not the best quality. By all means, run the Leopard, it's a great motor. If you want more speed CHEAP repeat CHEAP I still would try the HobbyKing KD 3674 1900KV XL motor.

As to LIPOs, I recommend Turnigy Nano TEC, 5000mAh 50-65C, 5S2P. The Leopard @ 31,450 RPM on 5S should give you good speed for fun boating. Enjoy! JIM

Just got back from Vacation today and my boat was waiting for me.

Initial impressions...this boat is huge! I am really excited to get it out on the water, and to now have a boat large enough to handle some windy conditions that my smaller boats couldnt always handle.

The hardware on the boat seems excellent as well, and overall quality of the boat is great.

Few questions, I went ahead and programed the ESC for 11.5* timing, is this a good place to start with this motor, or should I put it lower/higher?

I figured that was in the middle so should be a safe place to put it until you guys can tell me what would be right.

Last question, I changed out the deans to 4mm bullets (my 5.5's haven't showed up yet) so that I can use it with my packs. I will be running 2x 2s Lipos in series to make 4s. I want to make sure this is right the way I am hooking it up. So am I right to Hook negative from one battery to positive of other battery, and then hook up esc to the other positive and negative from the batteries?

A little advice..
Take it easy the first few runs. I dont mean go slow. The more you are wide open, the easier it is on your gear. What I mean is, run about a minute max, then check temps. Actually time it. It is a little extra work, and hard to do sometimes with the excitement of running a new boat, but it's better than regretting you didn't.

While on that subject, yet unrelated, I know running part throttle is harder on the esc but is that because you are going part throttle to wide open off and on that stresses it, or is the part throttle itself the cause of it? In otherwords, if I were to make it so Wide open is actually only 50% power using my transmitter settings, so the boat is slower for say a person learning, but they drove wide open the whole time, is that okay, or is that hard on things?

As for the prop, it says Prather 225 on it. I am not sure if that will work, I assume it will since these things were way, way underpowered stock, and they still ran 4s through them with this prop, but maybe I should pull that off and put my Fastech Prop on it which is the equivalent to a prather 215 to break in it first doing the minute, bring it in and check temps thing..and then move up to the 225?

haha, ya it came with those on it. they are like a hard rubber material. The manual even says to leave them on when not in the water to avoid injury. Those suckers are razor sharp, so I plan to keep them on when it's not in use. I figure Better safe than sorry.

Can anyone comment on the Timing I have set on the ESC. I have it at 7.5* but I don't know what it should be at with this motor, or how to determine that. If someone could explain what it should be and why, it would be a great help.

I did change the prop to my Fastech prop which is the same size as a prather 215 on tonight, and took the stock prather 225 off. Should I even bother going with this smaller prop? Or should i just put the original 225 back on and do my testing from there?

Hoping to get it in the water tomorrow if the weather is nice in the late afternoon/evening

I think the coil configuration has a part in the timing, like delta or wye. As well as the number of poles. For a lower pole motor usually a lower timing setting. I would maybe start lower, like 3.5.

I only recommend the "cheap" HK motors because they give you a chance to buy & compare how motors of varying can length & KVs might work in any given boat CHEAP. Your Leopard is much higher quality and still reasonably priced. I have at least 20 Leopard motors from 2860s to 5692s, several Turnigys, as well as the entire HK 36mm series. While I've melted the silver solder off the bullet connectors and otherwise tortured many, I have never smoked ANY of them (yet). Not even the stock Miss GEICO, & Apparition - single & twin - motors.

For good quality motors at a reasonable price, Leopard is hard to beat. If & when you want to get a top rated quality motor, You might want to look at Castle Creations Nu wound motors, or some of the others discussed on other OSE forums. JIM
