Choosing an esc & batteries

Hi all,

I just purchased a 29" mono. (see thread: http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...ead.php?t=2860)

I need to power it and install an esc. How do I decide what batteries and what esc to use?

It will initially be used as a sport boat, but I might race with it too.

Go with the biggest ESC you can afford...
and 4s lipo or 12 nimh are good for this hull

I would run an 8XL with a 120 amp esc on 4s-2p lipo. I'd expect to see over 40.

Ahh, If you have the money Id go with Neu motor and hydra 240. Then change your props for sport and racing. plenty of power and reliability in both spectrums.

It comes with a KB45 11xl already, if thats the same boat as in the thread he posted.

You can't go wrong getting the biggest esc you can afford. It gives you all sorts of options for upgrades or downgrades in current and future projects.

As fas as batteries, LiPo's are the way to go. Like previously stated 4s would be plenty. Or if you want NiMh, go with 12-14 IB3600 or IB4200 cells.

I was ready to reply right away, but the UPS man just rang the bell and he had a package from OSE!

I assumed(!) the motor was brushless. It is a KB36 11XL Motor.

You say: “Go with the biggest ESC you can afford...” Why? My guess would be, because you have more “room” or flexibility if I decide to up the electrical system - and never a bad idea to be safer that sorry.

A (one) 4s lipo (4s1p?). And, 12 nimh – hooked up in series or parallel? I just bought 4 of Steven’s NiMH 4500 Packs for the SV & BJ but I thought that if I move up I should get lipo’s.

Tom, you’re saying get a (one) 4s2p lipo for it or is that two 4s1p’s hooked up in parallel?

calcagno45, your right this is the same boat as I posted in the swap shop (WTB: Radio & esc) forum.

I forgot in my initial post above that I am looking for a radio. What should I look for there? The 2.4 ghz looks reliable, but a bit more expensive than a standard FM radio. I’ve got three boats w/o radio’s and will need something for them. Hmmm, did I just steal my own thread???

Getting the biggest ESC you can afford allows you the flexibility to upgrade on motor and batteries eg a Nue 1515 1y and 4s1p or 2p lipos and that boat will be a rocket...4s1p is plenty power for that hull..
Hook 2 of ur 6cell packs in series to give you 12 cells.You can do this with a Y harness..http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...d=ose-yharness

I went to Castle Creations site and looked at thier ESC's and almost purchased one! Then I remembered that Steven sold them here. I ordered the 240 - on sale, just a little more that the 120 at regular price.

I also ordered (2) 4s1p 4500mah batterys.

Any prop suggestions? The boat comes with a 47mm 3 blade prop.
