I've seen a discussion a while back and it was decided that brake had no affect on RC boats. but I've also seen a discussion saying it was bad for the ESC to leave the brake off. so is there a middle ground? I like the slow deceleration of no brake but I don't want to damage the ESC.

I've been doing this a long time and have never heard of this. Having the brakes on or not on any given ESC that is so equipped is just a function of being in a particular setting. If leaving the brakes off were a bad thing why would there be the option to do so? Did you know that even a Schulze 40-160 has braking capability? I have seen dozens of these run in boats (including my own) with brake mode off and never have I seen a problem because of that. As far as using brakes on a boat it is pretty ineffective and really unnecessary.

You have more brakes with an FE than you know. Comming from nitro tunnels one of the first things we noticed was lifting the throttle too much on an FE tunnel may cause it to hook or roll over. These hulls carry the nose high and when it drops too quick it doesn't set correctly and turn well. On a nitro when you let off the thottle the carb closes but the motor freewheels somewhat for an instant but doesn't instantly loose rpm with some flywheel and just reciprocating mass momentum. When you back off the trottle on an electric motor your esc is telling it to go back to a lesser rpm and I don't think it freewheels anything like an internal combustion motor. If full throttle is 28000 rpm and half throttle is 14000 rpm on an FE its going to go there soon after you move the controller. If you actually stop a prop with a braking action the rear end if going to lift or go sideways or both. JMO
