im scratch building a 22in. rigger and do not understand angle of attack. my buddy has a JAE 12g2 and the sponsons appear to be in line with the tub. please shed some light on this for me. want a rigger not a submaine!

AOA is the relationship to minimal friction to maximum running speeds. Thats it in a nutshell. Now depending on "what" is defining the angular requirement is but a variable on sponson size and displacement OAL weight. There is no real assumed AOA. Records have been set with minimal AOA while others have performed poorly using past math. The numbers can and will vary. Depending on what speeds you want to attempt. 3 degrees seems to be a good starting point. But its just that. I would suggest a setup that offers you adjustablity if you dont know where you will end up at. The more experienced guys can elaborate. Some very knowlegable folks here to can assist.

The steeper the ride angle the FASTER, but looser the boat. I reduced the AOA of my UL-1 so that it would handled better and be less bouncy on the water. My Whiplash has about 2.5 degrees...my Ul-1 now has about 3 degrees.

When you are setting up the sponsons all the ride surfaces need to be at zero to read the correct angle on the sponsons. Lower powered hydros like N1 can use up to 4.5 degrees of angle. the bigger the boat motor the less the AOA is and most boats will need not more than 3.5 AOA. One thing to consider is the more angle in the tunnel with trap the less AOA is needed. Hope this helps a little.Comment
