df29 build help

Hey guys,
I am building a df29 and I bought the hull and this speedmaster hardware combo from Steve. http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...od=ros-monosys

The instructions that came with the hardware say to mount the stinger 3/16" from the keel. I was wondering if it means from the keel to the center line of the drive line or to the actual bottom of the stinger.

I looked at all the builds for the df29 & 33 and can't seem to find any exact measurements.

The actual bottom of the stinger diameter in relationship to the bottom of the keel....this is a great boat....enjoy

I am going to run it with a trunigy 180, a leopard 4074 2200kv with (2) 4s 5000mah 40c turnigys in parallel. I also have several props to try. I was thinking I would start with an x642.

I am not going to mount any trim taps yet, but i am going to mount the turn fins. I have these http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...prod=ose-80062
do you think they are the right size?

Any other set-up advice would be a great help too.

Those fins you bought will be fine. My boat actually has the Large OSE fin on it (Pic), but I am running a Med. Carbon Fiber one on the other side.

Hi i have the same stringer strut on my DF29 and the measurement from the bottom of keel to the bottom of strut is 5mm. Also this hull likes that strut cut down, the total length of mine is 55mm, i think i cut 25mm off the length.

Looks good...the main thing is to have the LEADING edge of the rudder the same distance the drive dog is from the transom....Heath, yours is just right (see his third pic).....

Also, start out with the stinger FLAT (neutral) with the keel and the trim tabs flush with the bottoms of the hull (also neutral)....use a straightedge to achieve both settings. Work on your center of gravity FIRST (move things around in the hull to get it there) and get the boat so it jumps off of the wakes and lands flat on the water at speed. CofG should be between 30% and 34%.

I have the same turn fins as you have from OSE and I removed them, I found that the they were to long and at higher speeds would cause the boat to Chine walk making it unstable on straightaways. The ones Heath has on his are the right size, out of the water completely on the straights. I have my strut cut back to the same distance as in Heaths picture, a tip that was given to me by Doug Smock and it runs great. The x642 should get you in the high 40s a m445 will put it to the mid 50s on calmer water, just watch the temps. You'll love this boat I'm sure. I've have mine for three years now and it's a blast to run.

hmmm i have the same stinger and am wondering if I should cut it down? only issue is my rudder bracket is too long for the leading edge of the rudder to line up like mentioned earlier with the drive dog..dangit.what is the diff in handling etc in cutting it?

Yes, cut it back Mr.Smock knows his sh*t and he helped me in my early years of FE boating as have many other members...too many to mention, but they know who they are.

so now i need to find a shorter rudder bracket shux.mine is 74mm i think where can i just buy the bracket? it is a 2 bolt style

I would suggest setting the boat with the hardware as it is, if your happy with the way it handles don't alter it, but if ur not then look at cutting it down. OSE might be able to sell you the shorter rudder (Hydro) bracket, if not speedmaster will have them. The only reason i cut mine down was for racing, the shorter strut seams to handle race water alot better than the longer one.

Thanks for all the info and pics guys. I double ordered all the hardware by mistake so I can cut one stinger down and leave the other one stock and try both.

I was able to mount all the hardware last night and will start a thread in the build section with pics over the weekend.

I am also going to start my phil thomas stealth build too.

Just hard to find time to build these as I have a seven month old daughter, and a 4 year old boy...the boy drives all my stuff and he is pretty good for his age, he runs my emaxx, rc8te and rc8be really well and drives all of my boats.

I built him a brushless reef racer, Its a blast, but he always wants to run either the brushless miss vegas, vac-u-pickle, the sv27 or the brushless vs-1.

one more thing, what pushrod seals are you guys using with this speedmaster rudder bracket and how do you have them assembled....?

I use Redline seal mounts and Aeromarine pushrod seals on all of my boats (they fit nicely in the rudder bracket pushrod hole). I epoxy the aluminum seal mount (w/ the black pushrod seal attached) to the Speedmaster rudder bracket BEFORE the bracket is mounted to the boat.....Let the epoxy set up and dry...then before mounting I use clear GE sillicone on the backside of the bracket/seal mount and bolt it to the transom. Remember to drill the pushrod hole in the transom large enough for the Redline mount to pass through (the same diameter as the hole in the Speedmaster bracket)....it will stick out past the back of the rudder bracket a bit.

Fred I use a 1/4" piece of brass tube epoxied in the transom and let it extend out the rudder hole about 1/2" and slide a large linkage boot over. http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...prod=ose-80454
