    Fighter Cat build question

I have started my build and I have few questions keep in mind this is my first boat build. I have searched through threads but haven't found exactly what I need. I plan to reinforce the hull with CF but just doing some initial rigging and trying to figure things out

    1. Distance from the transom for mounting the motor?? Ben told me the batteries should be in the sponsons and they would sit in past the hatch opening I have attached some pics for reference. (I may have misunderstood him too)

    2. If I moved the motor back to the next step in the sponson I would have a better angle for the drive cable but never be able to get to the batteries maybe they don't belong in the sponsons??

Appreciate any suggestions or help going to continue searching and reading threads.

    P.S.
Quick thanks to the guys at Offshore for fast shipping!

you might want to angle the mount so the f.cable doesnt flex too much at stern area. the point is you want get as much less flex as possible. Check out the HPR threads for references

what actually i did was to put everything in place. stingers, flex cable, motors, stuffing tube and the mount. then i would superglue the mount first then disassemble everything follow by epoxy at the mount.

i will get a picture up later for your reference.

Look here--http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/showthread.php?t=20367&highlight=larrys+twin+cat ,this should answer you questions. You will have to bend the stuffing tubes to help line things up.

Thanks Larry. I may take off the CF foot on the motor mount and change it to stainless so I can make it a bit narrower and glass is in them. The more I look at the photos in those links and and tweak mine I think I get it. Though I think he used a wire drive and I have a cable drive with teflon lined tubes.

                Thanks again

Take the battery trays out too. It's cramped enough in the sponsons for battery placement. Good thinking on the steel. Things have to be adjustable, or its going to be a giant headache. Mine have steel on the bottoms and I had to tweak mine to get the motor shafts lined up with the drives.

                    Updated rigging

Ok after looking at some other threads and working on this a bit more here is what I have.

Motor mount base plate is now aluminum and bent so I can get a better motor angle.
Base plate is now under the motor and I am 4 1/8" back from the transom were the stingers mount.

Question how far should the stuffing tube protrude into the stinger or should it stop at the transom? While I have a pretty straight shot out the back should I try to put a bit of a bend up just before the stuffing tube hits the transom to be closer to flat as it exists the transom?

Nothing is anchored down so it can all be changed.

                    Thanks

If I were building it, I would move the motors forward a bit. In your second pic, the back of the motor is almost even with that step. I'd put the front of the motor mount where that step is. Give yourself some working room with the stuffing tube.
The stuffing tube should be flush with the sponson transom. No need to protrude. Also, the stuffing tube should be flush with the transom-at the same angle if you know what I mean. Dont file it so its the same, you have to bend the tube. If you can see where my motors are placed in my silver cat in relation to the step you'll know what Im saying as far as motor placement. You also need a gap between the motor collet and stuffing tube. 3/8"- 1/2" will work fine.

I measured my motor mounts to give you an idea. I cant measure from my sponson transom because I have brass water pickup and outlet tubing in the way. My mounts are 4 1/4" from the rear hatch lip on the hull. This location has worked well for me, giving me plenty of stuffing tube to tweak and leaves it straight enough to run a wire drive ( which I do). I also put my batteries in the sponsons, although it is kind of a pain to get them in and out. I trimmed the hatch lip to help make it easier to get them in and out.

No problem I can do that but I need to turn the mount, I dont really see any issue with this its no stronger one or or 180 deg the other way.

You mean flip the floor part of the mount to the back of the boat? Where in IL are you?

                              Im in Crystal Lake

Flipped the mount and I agree I like the way the tube lays in with the motor back some and I can see that will make the batteries a pain but no biggie.

Thanks for your help! much appreciated.
