I lined mine with thin foam padding .... bottom, sides and then set a piece on top prior to closing!We did it with a Bang!

On my small batteries I have only the female Deans connectors, and the male connectors of my larger batteries have shrink tubing covers on them. Besides, the boxes are not bare metal - they are covered inside and out with a rust resistant paint.
