With a UL-1 motor in a P spec what you guys are running for Switching frequency. My controller temps are low and was thinking about changing the switching frequency. I know that with higher switching the controller temperature will be higher and the motor temps possibly lower but is that true for the UL-1 motor? Are there any advantages to higher switching frequency such as higher RPM?

What timing are you using for the UL-1 motor...I think that will have more impact.I let the dogs out...

correct timing for the UL-1 motor is 11.75 degrees. Increasing timing will make the motor run hot for very little return in extra power.Mini Cat Racing USA

I know what the stock timing is. I was asking about experience with different switching frequency settings.

Really...11.75 degrees? That's VERY precise. Don't most controllers use a variable range of timing, not just a fixed number?
According to HiFei:
Option 1: Low advance timing 0°~15° - Recommended for more lower pole count motors. Gives more power and slightly less efficient.
Option 2: Middle advance timing 5 °~ 20 ° - Recommended for most motors .Gives a good balance of power and efficiency.
Option 3: High advance timing 15° ~ 30 ° - Recommended for most of higher pole count motors
Option4:Auto(default) - Recommended for most of all brushless motors.
8kHz recommended for most brushless motors?

11.75 for most applications. You can run a UL-1 on 15 degrees; I run one of my setups that way for heat racing BUT I have a big fan blowing on it.

Eric, I used the 8 mHz frequency setting on my ICE100 in my FE-30 with the UL-1 motor, that seems to work well.
Speaking of timing, there is no such thing as an optimum timing for all applications of any motor. The 'optimum' timing depends on the amp draw of the motor, which depends on the setup. Since setups with this motor can range from 60 amps to nearly 100 amps, obviously the optimum timing will vary as well. I have run both 10 degrees (stock) and 15 degrees. With setups which draw 80+ amps, 15 degrees seems to work better/cooler. I don't have excess heat in the motor or ESC with either setting.

That's interesting... I just converted a Phoenix ICE-100 for my Stiletto and the lowest setting, which according to the manual is the default, is 12kHz... I'll have to go look again.Originally posted by Fluid View PostEric, I used the 8 mHz frequency setting on my ICE100 in my FE-30 with the UL-1 motor, that seems to work well.
According to the manual, the 16kHz setting is for "very low inductance motors - RARE", and there is a 24 and Outrunner mode as well.
I tested a Stiletto motor on an ESC set at 16kHz and it burned the ESC up. I'm going to stick with the 12 or 8 setting.Darin E. Jordan - Renton, WA

Sorry, I misread the question. 8Khz is the PWM setting for the motor.Mini Cat Racing USA

Darin, what version firmware do you have? My ICE100 has the following frequency options:
24 KHz
16 KHz
12 KHz
8 KHz
Outrunner Mode(*)
According to the asterisk, Outrunner Mode is the default setting.

Jay, I'll have to look again. I was going by the users guide (http://www.castlecreations.com/suppo...User_Guide.pdf)... Now that I look at it, I have the default wrong... it is outrunner. I don't recall seeing an 8kHz setting, but I'll go look today when I'm at the lake testing this afternoon...Originally posted by Fluid View PostDarin, what version firmware do you have? It has been my experience that nearly all inrunners are set at 8Khz. Most of the outrunners I have are set at 16Khz. Not sure what the default from Castle is as the asterisk doesn't really tell us anything. Which outrunner motor are you using?Mini Cat Racing USA

Be carefull... I know that if you set the PWM too high, you'll let out some nasty smelling stuff... Trust me, I just recently found out!

I think only the Turnigy ESC's have this 11.75 degree setting. The HiFei/Swordfish ESC's have a variable range for each setting (0 -15 degrees & etc.)Originally posted by properchopper View PostYES !!
