News to me also, no one told my boats not to run with outrunners. I run cheap motors and the $10 to $20 outrunners have worked great for me. 1/10 crackerbox, 16" hydro and my 40" scarab all have outrunners that were less than $20 each.
You can get some pretty decent outrunners for fast speeds.
Please don't let my boats know they don't work, right now they are happy.

A simple search of this board will show that a lot of folks use outrunners with great success. We don't need trolls fishing for controversy on OSE. If that is the OP's intent, he needs to go here - they love pot-stirrers on that board. You can even resort to name calling: http://www.jrcbd.com

If this is running like crap then I guess I'll have to take the Outrunners out and shelve it.
btw this is one of 3 of my many boats that has an OR motor
See it....find the photos.....sketch it it....build it........with wood

Cooling Question
OK I have to admit I've wondered about Outrunners too and know they have been used successfully I am curious how you cool them?
It might be obvious to some but all I can think of is a water cooled mount and not sure about that?

Mine in the cat shown above are air cooled along with the esc'sOriginally posted by CaptPJB View PostOK I have to admit I've wondered about Outrunners too and know they have been used successfully I am curious how you cool them?

My trick was to well over spec the power system so that it is not drawing nuts amps to produce the power I want.
There is not a lot of air room in there but as an idea when the boat came in off that run which was 3 mins mostly at wot the packs were warm, esc's warm, motors able to touch for 4-5 seconds (just).
Cell voltage was 3.82 all round, it is 5S.
The OR in my 18" cat is aircooled too..........oh and the mystery ESC and that thing goes like a cat shot in the ass.

It's plenty. Outrunners can run at higher temps too.Originally posted by CaptPJB View PostOK I have to admit I've wondered about Outrunners too and know they have been used successfully I am curious how you cool them?

I dunno... Because someone told you they were and you believed them?Originally posted by lucozader View Post??? why ???
He he. I just recently had a few gasser questions there and noticed just that when reading around a bit. Seems a drama fest over there.Originally posted by Fluid View PostA simple search of this board will show that a lot of folks use outrunners with great success. I'm having an awesome time running them as twins and monos. They also seem to be right on the money with KV for HV setups. Low amps, low temps, long run times and really good performance.Originally posted by JimClark View PostMost of the outrunners that are successful seem to be Helicopter motors.

The outrunner on my KOS P1 seems pretty good, the only thing is the touque roll from it is a bit of a nightmare, how are you guy securing them to the hull? with a similar clamp as venom are using?

My Scorpion HK-4025 is screwed to a single rail mount like this:

My small outrunner is screwed to a stand alone mount which is glued to the hull bottom, kinda like this one:

Hellicopter outrunner motors work better because they have higher Kvs - they are run in geared applications. Most larger outrunners for planes have very low Kvs, some down below 300 rpm/volt.

I make my own watercooled mounts from 6mm Aluminium & glue them in between the rails with a bit of bracing each side. A bit industrial perhaps but nice & solid.
Here's a couple of pics when the Red Devil had the Turnigy 2200kv heli motor in it.
I now run the Typhoon 500 in it.
