its very simple....a dry surface is all you need no matter what tape
you use on fe(no gas or heat or nitro to get on surfaces)
hochey ,3m,electric tape work fine...get the good stuff in any tape and the goo
is minimal at best...but like one guy said it is possibly not the tape but a leak somewere esle....your just going in the wrong direction to find it.
sit down and start over...you will find the problem ,it may just take alittle time.
and ask all the questions you need....alot of people on here will help ..
not all try to hinder

I've had more loose and leaking hatches with hockey tape. I use clear electrical tape GE brand.

I used electrical tape for a long long time.. any electrical tape... in fact ace hardware brand I liked best.... it comes off easy and doesn't take decals with.... I think its just as good as hockey tape myself.... I always had very very good luck with it..... I use hocky tape now just because I know its what you all use!!! ha ha...

Check what you are cleaning your boat with. I used goofoff to remove some stickers and had a similar issue. Stevie cleaned the hull again with alcohol and it was fine after.

I wax the painted "top" portion of my boats to keep them looking good.... But I then use alcohol, or acetone, to remove the wax around where I use tape on the hatch... I recommend picking up some acetone to remove any grime where you need something to stick.... And it also won't harm your paint or clearcoat... I just get mine from my work as we have been using it at my dealership for years for all different uses to help clean areas before we try and make something "stick"..... Your local auto parts store generally will carry it!

Interesting replies. My boat is always dry and clean when I apply the tape. And the top deck is high gloss carbon fiber so it's a perfectly smooth surface. Here's the bubbles when I pump air into the hull under water:

Maybe this isn't the best way to test for leaks but that is a lot of air coming out at the corners.

Uhhhh, watch that advice about Acetone not hurting your paint! Remember, not everybody uses automotive paint! The rattle can guys will hate you! You CAN safely use denatured alcohol on just about anything. That's what I keep handy for cleaning the surfaces to be taped.

i have kids so it easy to just
grab a free baby wipe---(free = no oils,prefumes or scent)
trust me there far from free$$$$$
then just wipe dry it takes all the goo ..if any off and
leaves my boat looking new and smooth as babys butt(sorry couldn't resist)

and dan can you give an idea of were that leak is????hatch?hull?
hard to see in pic.im sure you went over all this already
but lets start over and see what we can see....when did it start?
did you switch tape or any thing else?if boat sits in water for a long period
of time 10mins or so does it take on water?
if you tape it all up and lightly spary water at it does it take on water?
just trying to think out side the box...does seem like alot of water to be the tape.
