Horizontal stabilizer SAW hydro

Hi guys!

Sometimes I see a horizontal stabilizer on SAW hydro. What function does it perform? If it is a spoiler and it should press the prop, then why is it not adjustable?

It's a wing in ground effect. Because of the properties of that wing, it maintains the prop depth within close limits. This allows a lot of prop weight without making the prop run too deep. Notice how far forward the sponson step is. A very large portion of the boat's weight is on the prop.

It also helps make the boat longitudinally stable. If the angle increases, the rear wing's lift increases, restoring the boat's angle. If the boat dives, the very forward sponsons drastically increase lift while the wing loses lift.

Thank you very much for the detailed answer. If I want to equip my hydro with the same wing, I initially set it to 0 degrees, right?

Yes at the desired ride angle. It needs to be close to the surface at this angle. This video of a different boat has a frame grab and some close ups that show the running attitude.

I actually have one of them now, i will run it at Munich this year for the SAW event in 3 weeks
