I haven't done it but others that use the 3m contact cement say it works great. The next time, I am going to use that method.

Ok I guess ill just do it with out the roller, does anyone know what type of resin the DF hulls are made out of?

I am looking to layup a DF hull, I have some fiberglass resin and hardener from the home depot. Will that work good enough to hold the CF?

Also where can I get a metal rib roller? Thanks

If its a glass hull, which I assume it is, and if its layed up in Epoxy resin, you have to put epoxy resin over it. If its Poly resin, you can use Poly or Epoxy. Thats what Ive been told and thats my method of madness and have never had any issues. Theres no need for a rib metal roller if you cant find one locally. I use a combination of a disposable 1" brush and a 4" foam roller. I heard mixed opinions on the ribbed roller w/ CF.. some love it, some say it tears it up too much and they wont do it. I opt not to try it. My .02

Straight epoxy on ABS NOT RESIN. Resin will not stick, from what Ive experienced, tried and been told.

so you can you these metheds on abs to? i was thinking that you would put down resin then lay the glass then wet out with resin and call it a day..

Mate the reason i use fiberglass cloth, It's a lot cheaper than the carbon.
Also helps to get the thickness you require .
Some people like to lay the fiberglass cloth over the carbon so that the carbon doesn't affect your electronics.
Carbon fiber is conductive.

The plate in the pictures is for a bulkhead in my new cat .
It only needs to be shinny on one side.
If i where building a motor mount plate i would have the fiberglass cloth in the middle of the lay up and carbon on both the outside layers.
Then you would have 2 shinny carbon surfaces.

bonewar, looks nice on the plates. Im getting ready to try and make some plates for the first time and im curious why you use fiberglass cloth on only one side. and i guess whats the reason for the fiberglass in the first place? why not just straight carbon? thanks

Carbon fiber plate

While we are on the subject of carbon fiber.
I will add this.

CARBON FIBER PLATE.

It is very easy to make yourself a 1-3mm thick plate.
Very useful for bulkheads, reinforcements ,servo mounts.

What you will need!

2 PIECE 6MM THICK PLAIN GLASS.
PVA PLASTRENE RELEASE AGENT.
2 PIECES OF CARBON.
1 PIECE OF LIGHT GLASS CLOTH.
RESIN,BRUSH, ROLLERS.

Method

OK, First coat the glass with the PVA let dry.
Cut carbon and glass mat to desired length,width.
Mix enough resin for the job.
Brush on a layer of resin onto the glass.
Lay first piece of carbon down,roll in.
Add 2nd layer of carbon ,add more resin brush in ,roll in.
Add 3rd layer of fiberglass mat roll in. Making sure there is no air trapped in the layers.
Lay down 2nd piece of glass.
Now very carefully add weight.
Leave for 1 day and let it cure, spread the glass apart with very little force (couple flat knifes).
Clean part , glass in water, and there you have it.
A 1.5mm thick piece of carbon fiber plate.
2 make thicker parts just use the same method and add more layers.
Up to 3mm thick with this method.
Finished product comes out real strong and shinny.

Great info Randy. I was contemplating adding some reinforcement in a mini rio as the hull has been cracked. I may try your method on that. So you ONLY use ca as the "resin" or do you put resin over the ca after it has cured? And whichever method is over a light coat of super 77 to adhere the carbon or glass to the hull?

Lots of good information hear on fiber lay up. I have been real busy this weekend sorry I did not have time to help but I think what has been said By Bone war and the rest will help you. I have to get ready to go to Golden Gate Park and run boats with Wilmer. It is beautiful out side today!


I have been thinking about how I use the Super 77 on the Styrene lay up and it does bond. I think that what chris was saying is true if you put too much 77 on I never thought about it before. But the way I do it and that is only for ABS Or styrene with Thin CA It does seep threw and create a bond. I have noticed further up the hull if there is not enough thin CA to seep threw is is not bonded.

Ive layed up a couple cats now and have done them in one piece using 5.7oz 2x2 twill. Takes a little time but they have all turned out very nice. I get about 20-30 min work time before the resin begins to kick. So far thats been just enough time to make things right.

V-hulls are so much easier.

M12 sounds like its going to be an impressive build.

And man, sometimes the obvious just sneaks right by... pull out one strand to get your straing line. I feel like such a .... Straining my eyes to try and follow the patter to cut it straight... and theres the solution. Thanks for that tip!

Mate for the Simrad cat it was a 1 piece of 5oz plain carbon.
Slow cure resin catalst. I think i heated up the resin for this one as well.
I use ca to hold down the carbon in a few spots then added the resin, wet out with brush and rolled in method.
And it did come out very nice.

For the M12 Maritimo 5oz twill carbon.
Epoxy resin with a 20 min work time.
1 layer of black glass 1 layer of carbon same resin method.
Also the join on both sides of the hull get a layer of glass for added strength.
This M12 is caring 7+ hp don't want the floor of the cat to move.
