Clear Coats

Im glad i found this thread . I have sealed up my VS-1 hull with 2 part epopxy on the seams. Know i need to clear the hull to help protect it . I Was thinking about using krylon clear coat. Because i have used it on my rigger & it looks pretty good. Any thoughts on this ?. Also does using a mat, satin or gloss clear coat make a difference ?.

Save yourself the headache of working w/ Krylon in the Fl climate.. DONT DO IT!!!! I just finished a boat using Duplicolor clear. Comes in a can and have to shoot it thru a gun, looks fantastic and applies wonderfully. First time Ive used it and IM very pleased. Its about 30 bux a can (qt) at Autozone

If using auto paints (single stage) you must clear it when it is still tacky. Which makes it hard if applying decals. If not then you have to scuff it again to apply. The clear should be a 2 part. I get it from O

Interesting point very high humidity can screw up any paint job as it delays the flashing of the paint and you may apply another coat prior to it totally flashing. If the paint still has a wet look to it do not apply another coat. Also with clear coat check for compatability with your base/colour coat prior to applying to your boat

I fought and fought w/ it (Krylon) and never won. I got it close, but it kept wanting to haze when it dried. Like a milky finish, not clear. I ended up building a small spray booth out of carboard boxes in a spare bedroom and shot a final coat on it that way. Still isnt perfect but good enough to quit waisting time on it. (BlackJack 26 - Krylon)

And yes, single stage must be cleared while base colors are still fresh. What I did on my last project was put 2 light coats of clear on about 30 minutes after the last color. Then scuffed it w/ 600 and am now applying decals. I will hit it w/ another coat or 2 when finished to seal it all up. (HOTR cat - Duplicolor paint)

If they are real vinyl cut graphics there is no need to clear over them. much easier to repair without clear on them and mine have never come off. Now water slide decals that is another story. i put clear down then the decals then just mask off the decal and apply clear over it.

Are you saying any clear i use should be 2 part ?. I am asking beacause i have used krylon before with good results in my opinion. Im not painting any color on the hull. Im keeping the natural wood color. I just need a couple coats of clear on my VS-1.

I've gotten good results with 'Minwax spar urathane'. takes about 3 coats to get a nice smooth finish...but it holds up to hatch tape and if it is important it stays semi flexible (great for the hatches on my rigger which are just a piece of 1/32 ply ). hth

Well 2 part is obviously the best and will hold up for very very long and is harder. Krylon Clear is fine for most jobs for does not have the strength or clearness a good auto 2 part will.

Can you use this clear over Krylon?
I wanted to add a deep clear coat over my CAT UL-1, but I did not want to take a chance of messing up my UL-1.

I still do not understand why people want to put a clear coat over Krylon and other gloss paints, base coat paints require a clear coat as they have no gloss and are not durable without this protectant/gloss finish. Lacquer, which is my preference and other common spray can paints offer the advantage of very easy repair if the paint is damaged, with a clear coat finish this is not possible.
I have used clear coat finishes but I find the end result looks plasticky and a real pain in the ass to fix, if it is damaged at the base coat.
I know some of these thoughts are old school but for the amateur painter it makes sense to me, as most do not have the tools, safety gear or expertise to apply the new high tech paints.
I will now get off my soap box and I trust I do not fall flat on my face

I like to use it as some do give more of a "deeper shine" (not Krylon) but mainly just to cover decals to assure they will not peel in time, be it from just not wanting to stick anymore, hatch tape or bumping and banging. Just another layer of protection.

adding clear makes the color POP!
I have a MV that I did up in white a silver, and when I added clear, holy cow did the paint come to life!
and on my CAT UL-1, it made it look awesome
also with clear it will help protect the paint color, small nicks can be scuffed and re cleared and will look new again

Asa long as it is not a metallic you can sand with 1200 and then clear coat.
