Toysport Jolly Single on NIMh's

Thinking about a Cat build and i'm somewhat interested in the Jolly Cat single motor/drive hull. Simple question, as light as the hull is would an SV27 motor/ESC work good in that hull on NiMh's?? I don't care about all out speed, i just want reliability, user friendly, and a decent handling set-up for weekend fun at my family's lake house. Thanks

I would have to say no. You will need a 9xl and minimum 80amp esc for a nice reliable sport setup. Id say 4s on a 40mm prop for 30 mph.

I kinda figured. Well i have a 9xl and a 150a Etti in my yellow boat (avatar pic), i actually considered swapping that set-up into a cat but i really don't want to take the v-bottom apart. I would have thought since the Jolly cat is so light (39 onces w/running hardware) a moderate motor/esc would work good. What about the UL-1 Superior motor/ESC? I suppose i could do another Feigao motor and good speed control but i really don't want to spend that kinda money again.

Give it a whirl man. The sv motor would be better than the ul-1 for sure though. Worst case scenario, all you gotta do is swap out the gear.

I am entertaining the idea, i really like the Jolly hull's look, very accurate scale to the modern offshore race cats out there today. I just went back and looked tho, the hull is bigger than i thought, 34.5 inches which is quite a bit bigger than the SV27, i don't know if i should waste my time with the SV stuff. I have an SV27, i love the performace and i run mine completly stock with just a better metal prop. I would want the Jolly to run mid 30's like the SV27, i see guy's on youtube running 60+ but thats way faster than i need. If not the SV27 combo, what would be a good alternative motor/esc to run on NIMH's (no lipo's) for the Jolly cat? Thanks

I was thinking more about the wetted surface on the jolly as apposed to the SV. More boat in the water (friction) coupled with more mass = more amp's being pulled. The motor will probably take the heat but I see white smoke for the esc.

12 cells total, i use Duratrax DTX 6 cell packs, i have 3800's and 4600's and will probably buy a set of DTX5000's in the spring.

I run 9XL in SV27 on 4S & 6S and recently blew the sh__ out of a 90am esc, if you run 9XL, go bigger on the esc, you then wont have to worry about what props you run. It is human nature to want more speed eventually...tru one of the 180amp Turnigy's or the 200am hi-models.

Also, the SV27 Motor is a very strong and capable motor, the fact is is 6 poles make a difference as well, I cooked my original one in my SV, due to the end bell coming loose, then the motor torque twisted and kinked the cooling lines allowing no water flow.

But even on 6S that motor loves to work.
