    Best motor for speed

ok I am a newb to RC boats. I bought a Deep Vee 26'' boat hull from R2Hobbies (http://www.r2hobbies.com/rc-boats/ar...cing-boat.html) I got it today an hooked up the rudder and drive shaft. what I want to know is what motor I can install to make the boat go as fast as it can. I am using this ESC- (http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...arehouse_.html). I was looking at this motor but I have no idea what the differences are between motors. right know I am just going by price. http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...arehouse_.html

Welcome to OSE! You should choose a water cooled ESC, the one in the link is not and is likely to overheat inside a sealed boat. The motor is suitable for 4S voltage, a good choice for a boat this size if you want high speed. Realize these are budget parts, they may work fine but maximum performance is better with higher quality parts. But as a starter boat they will go as fast as the hull can handle.

ok thanks I will look into the ESC. I don't know if its possible to tell with the info I provided but what speed would you say the boat would max out at? also the website says that the motor can handle a 5s.

For your info. I posted this to answer the other guy, this was not long ago:

          it's a 3974 can and only a 1200watt motor??
you get that power from a 2860 size motor!!
i don't think you can put in such a heavy /big motor in that hull : it's only 26"" and has a flood chamber ( limits the room inside)

that motor will sink your boat :-)

          i suggest a 2860 or perhaps a 3660 size
3000-3300 Kv a 3s lipo and a 38mm prop wil get you where you want with this hull
          my 2 cents

ok thanks I think I will go with the 3400KV leopard motor. because the motor has a max og 80 amps does that mean that you cant have any higher then an 80 amp ESC?

              i had a 26" hull :leopard2860 2910Kv with a 38 mm 1.4P 2 blade tenshock prop , 3s 4000 40 c lipo , 90A seaking
runtime 6-7 min , 60-65 km/H ,motor and esc barely warm

i suppose but the 3400Kv ( also the 2860) will get it above the 70 km/h but will draw more amps turning that same prop , so i would go for maybe the 120A controller in combination with the 3400Kv

i would suggest propping down at first runs : 36mm to get the feeling before searching for the limits (maybe the motor can swing a 40 mm prop, check the temps! )
keep in mind that the boat probably isn't equiped with state off the art hardware so 37000rpm is going to be hard on the stuff

                I have to agree.
And that much spinning mass in such a small boat will cause handling problems in my opinion.
I have had one of those hulls to build up for ages. Now I'm inspired.
This is the motor I have for it. 1600 watts in a 29mm motor.

                http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...ion_29mm_.html

                A 120A ESC, 4s lipo, a de tongued X440/3 blade prop
                That will be my setup.

If you are going to run 3s, then this one might be an option. A bit less total wattage available but still more than the big Aquastar.

See the danger. THEN DO IT ANYWAY!!!

Thanks again for the help. I ended up getting a leopard 3650 4550KV motor running in a 3S 5000mah lipo 20c constant with 30c burst. Also got a 120amp hobbyking esc. I'm keeping the stick 34mm prop for now and will eventually upgrade it. Hoping to run it on this setup for the first time tomorrow.

what???? am I reading this correctly??? 4550KV on 3s = 50,000 rpm??? a 120amp speedo?? = smoke??? My race setups on ALL OF MY BOATS are between 27-32,000 rpm. Oh and 20C batteries??? prepare for more smoke? You should really read up a bit more on setups and how to calculate rpm and amp draw, but what you have is a recipe for failure and fire.

Lipo: 20c at 5000mah = 100 amps constant 30c burst = 150 amps ...Motor: KV = rpms per volt a 3S lipo full charged = 12.6v so 12.6 x 4550 = 57,000 rpm and your using a plastic prop thats going to come apart....You asked for advice and ignored it, make sure no innocent bystanders get hurt....bring a good fire extinguisher

Do some research, your motor is to big and to high a kv for that boat and esc its going to pull more amps than esc and lipos can handle....40c minimum is what I suggest to all my boat customers..check out the speed calc up top of page to start....save that motor for a hot 2S boat

I know ok I get it I made a mistake this is my first time with RC boats. I asked what I could do to make it safe to run.

good thing you asked before putting that in the water!!

but ,good advice was given and you ended up with that!

                            last try :

i can't see but: is that esc watercooled?rather usefull in a FE!

that coupler is a real danger for your boat ,yourself and anyone close, my god! please don't use that

motor not ideal but will do :good size but wrong KV so only and only using 2s!!!!!!

that toy prop : i wouldn't trust it

ok thanks yes the esc is watercooled. I will get a 2s lipo to run it on and another prop. I will get another coupler but don't understand what is wrong with this one.
