TP Power motor vs Leopard

So I've been testing a ready to run df cat we are going to start building for retail sale.
I've been playing with leopard 4082, 4092 and TP motors.

First test was a 4082 1600 ran the boat 55mph with (2) 3s 45c 5000mah packs with a octura m series. I forget which one.

Second I tested a Tp 1800kv(the equivalent size to a 4092) motor with (2) 3s 45c 5000mah packs. the best run came while using a octura x450 2 blade. 60.1mph

Third test I ran a Leopard 4092 1730kv motor. First pass with the SAME EXACT setup as the tp 1800kv motor and it ran 67.5 out of the gate!!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't keep it under control with the x450. the boat literally had so much torque it could easily put itself on its back from a standstill. I put in (2) sets of 6s 35c 5400 mah packs run in parallel and it settled a bit and still ran 65mph but was a tank because of all the battery weight. I didnt get much more time, but next time out, I will go back to (2) 3s packs and test with a few more three blades.

This boat has much more in it, but I didn't want to mess with strut angles and heights during the testing.

Sounds like TP motors are junk!! Jk. The long Leopard sounds nice.

That looks pretty sweet Steven. So it will come with everything but motor and ESC? What kind of motor mount is included? Also, will it come painted/decaled or just the base colors?

On the outside it comes exactly as seen. I'm using the ose-80600 motor mounts. All thats required is transmitter, receiver, esc and motor. Installed servo is also included. Of course i can also provide at that stuff included. Thats why I listed as a base, then can add other items how the customer wants it.

Welcome to the Leopard fan club Stephen. I probably have two of every boat motor (and water jacket) they make & have never met a Leopard I didn't like. Midrange in price, excellent quality, premium Japanese bearings, long lasting and powerful. They also make the best water jackets out there for almost all of thier motors. Whats not to like?

Alot of the motor selection advice on OSE tends to recommend $300-$500+ full-on race motors for virtually any setup. But not everyone is going to be competing against the handful of semi-professional sponsored NAMBA racers on the circuit. The vast majority of FE boaters out there just want to have fun driving thier boat with family & friends. Those who become infected by the racing bug, join a FE NAMBA club and start racing in Heats, Oval and Offshore - can & will win races without throwing cubic money at thier boats.

Given the right hull, a quality speed controller, the right Leopard motor for thier requirements, & good advice from experienced FE boaters, a newbie will be more likely to stay with & help grow our FE community.

Jim I agree. When I tested the two motors, It was done for a reason. the reason was to carry the tp line or not to. this proved to me that Leopard stays. Ive had very few Leopard failures. Some examples, I had a guy run a 28mm motor in a 40" boat that died , a guy run a 30" boat on a 3900kv motor and 4s. And a few other similar situations. Also people comparing the 4074 and 4082 to Neu 1527 motors. They are not the same size so can not be considered equal. Part of those errors come from Leopard rating the watts similar to what Neu rates a 1527. But its not correct.

Can i ask what you set the esc to for the 4092 motor as i know some Seakings have the lvc cut in after a few seconds of running & you have to set the lvc lower or not set to auto on cells.

I always select the lipo count I am running and not allow the esc to autoconfigure it. I dont remember the lvc setting. I think it was 3.0.

the only time I've run into the lvc problem was when I used junk cells or cells that didnt handle the required amps. I had that issue last fall. After using the packs a bit more in another boat, one of the packs swelled up.

Would the 1730kv on 6s be ok in a DF 41" deep v or would the 1390kv on 6s be better suited both on Seaking 180.
