Need sage advice on which ESC to use.

Hmmm all interesting stuff. So you guys are saying that the 1521 1577kv Neu is too small for a 37in Ariane on 6S? That's cool and sure am willing to be schooled with this. Toyed with the 1527 but advice at the time of buying was that it was overkill for this hull.

So - options are.
- maybe get some 5S batts to run in Parallel for this setup.
- get a 1527 sized motor in a kv range better suited for 6S
- Either a Swordfish 240 or 300.

Thanks for the advice guys. I know some are tired of trying to advise guys who aren't willing to listen - been reading this forum for years now. :-) I just want to get this boat fitted with a good sport setup that has a sniff of speed about it. Not going to go sulk and throw a tantrum if you tear the current setup I have to shreds.

I had a 1521-1y in my No-step 4 (36" Mono) I actually had it in the boat for more than 8 years. It was great on practice runs, but Nat's after Nat's in the 4 minute Q-offshore it would thermal quicker and quicker. I then even started having thermal issues in the Q-Mono heat races. I finally had enough and bought a new motor the same model. The first heat or 2 of offshore it was fine and then started the same old thermal problem that I had originally. I never had an ESC failure probably since it has always had a 40.160 old style Schulze, and also never really had battery problems although they were at their limit. Bottom line this set-up is right on the edge on this size hull if you want to race it or do any extended sports run times. Pushing this undersized / over KV'd motor this hard just overheats the stator windings till it thermals and eventually ruins the motor and any of the rest of the power system unless everything else is really bullet-proof. I will be running a 1527-1Y this year which will be just enough to make it a reliable multi-use set-up. Please understand the 1527-1Y is still an extremely aggressive set-up, so going lower KV is another option depending on your planned use. Running either on 5s is another option. I don't have any knowledgeable suggestions on ESC's other than go overkill. 40.160's are hard to find, but a Castle 200 ICE might be just as good and easier to find since both are no longer in production.

Ya dont mind my comment Lol. Im just running what Travis suggested I run in my rivercat and made the mistake of putting the ESC in my pos spartan because I hadnt had a boat to run in a month and couldn't wait I had to get my fix Lol oh well live an learn

Couple of things before I get into my reply

- if I go a 1527, what motor mount is a good, solid one for that motor.

- Travis can you point me in the direction of some decent 6.5mm bullets?

So really what I want is to sport around our club lake for a good few minutes. 5mins or so per run if I can wing it. I don't want to be left behind though by the other club members. 50 - 60 mph (80-96km/h) would be plenty though. Any more than that is for another time.


The 1527 Neu 1Y Steve lists as a 1250kv Unit - just to put that in the conversation.


Now if I go that 1527 1250kv and run that on 6S with a SF300 - that would be a more solid/forgiving setup with a little care in proper boat setup?


Travis says 1500kv with success - but I suppose that's from an experienced standpoint. But his 50 - 60mph observations are about what I'm shooting for.


So maybe - go 1500kv and run it 5s while I dial the boat in with the replacement gear. Try 6S when I'm happy?

I like the castle 6.5mm bullets. And the 6.5mm green castle connectors for the batteries. That's what I like to use anyway. I haven't had any come unsoldered and they seem to work. The 1500kv on 6s is about 33k rpm loaded. I don't see that as too hot a setup for sport boating. Now a days things have changed and 35k rpm really isn't too high. Technology has gotten better. The 1250kv version will do it too, you'll just need to run a bigger prop. I had a 1250kv version in a 37" cat a while back and it scooted along pretty well. The 1250kv version may play a little nicer with the Esc but if you get the sf300 that really won't be a concern anyway as it can easily handle the 1500kv version on 6s all day long. You will have more flexibility with 1500kv too. Say you wanna go 50ish. Well 5s will put you there. 4s for even more slow speeds, prolly mid to high 40's. Now the 1250kv will be slightly more boring as you go down in volts. I remember that 6s was fairly slow with that motor in my cat. It liked 8s really to keep me interested. And keep in mind this was the fastest boat I had owned at that time. Decisions decisions. Lol

Now - just so I can gel this a bit more and think the problem through over the Aussie Night.

According to Keith Bradley - that 300Amp swordfish weighs in at 520g. That is unless you get Keith's KBB spec version which he's cunningly cut down to 280g.

Will the 6500mah 3S SPC batts in series cut it *if* I go the 1527 SF300 route?

I have some 5500mah 6S Silver Label Revolectrix batts. But those are beasts and are too heavy to run 2 in parallel in the Ariane hull, especially with a behemoth ESC. What Mah could I cut the 6S batts down to to save on a bit of weight?


Can anyone recommend a good motor mount for the Neu 1527's?


Thanks Travis on the Castle Connectors info. Had a quick look at them on Tower Hobbies. They seem stubbier and smaller than I remember in some pics, but in other pics they look better. *Are* there stubby ones to stay away from? ... and yeah... frikkin decisions lol!!

Will ponder all this for a bit. Any other thoughts and I'm all ears.

The kintec adjustable mount is pretty much all I use. It fits pretty much anything.
