new 4000mah 4s 40c lipo why charger reads 3mah??

hey,,, ok i just received some 4000mah 4s 40c lipos (turnigy) and im trying to set my charger to 4a (4000mah) but when i initiate the charge it jumps back down to 3a.....any idea what's wrong here? it a passport dynamite 1s to 6s lipo charger. (also new)

Dont know much about that charger............but when batts are not completely depleted, the charger may not start out at full amperage setting. Yours being new should have been about 30% charged or so...........somewhere in there..........

Just a guess but your charger may only put out 50 watts. If you charged that 4s batt at 4 amps it would exceed the chargers capabilties which is why the charger may have dropped it down to 3 amps. Just a guess of course.

well, the charger is capable of up to 5a, anyhow, yea the batteries were not completely depleted. i dont like to run them down too low. oh well, im just hoping i dint lose "mah" in under 10 min of complete usage

there new in the sense that i only ran the batteries under 10 min of usage total!

and yes, they were not completely depleted. so im hoping thats the case. im hoping i my batteries dint lose any "mah" storage in just that 5 min run

Yes I understand that, but the charger won't charge at the requested amp rating if it exceeds the wattage rating of the charger.

At the bottome is says 50 watts but in the top it says charge at 5 amps so yes it can charge batteries at 5 amps but not all batteries.

Example a 2s 5000mah battery can charge at 5amps because it will only use about 40 watts your 4s battery charging at 5 amps will exceed the 50 wattage rating. My point is certain batteries will charge at 5 amps not all if it exceed the wattage rating. The wattage rating of a charger is one of the most important things to look at..

You must also consider the
battery pack’s series cell count (i.e. 2S, 3S, 4S,
etc...) as the voltage of the pack being charged

i agree with diesel...i have a orion clubman that will only charge my 4 c 5000's at 4.5..its just the top of the chargers capabilites......

No that charger will work, it just won't charge that 4s at 5amps. To add your batts should be charged at 1c (unless they are turnigy nano-techs), meaning you shouldn't be charging that 4000mah batt at higher then 4 amps. So with all that being said your charger will work just fine. It will just take a little bit longer to charge that's all. Most chargers that have a ac plug in will have a 50 watt rating so every charger with a 50 watt rating is going to do the same thing your charger is doing now. If you want to charge that 4000mah 4s pack at 5amp you will need a charger and power supply that can supply a min of about 80 watts...

That is the way this chargers are.
This is normal and simple to check.
Plug in 2S and you see it will charge at 5Amp, but when you plug 4S it will drop down to 3-3.5amp.
No worries, your charger is fine and acting normal.
It would need to be capable of up to 10Amp charging to be able to put 5amp in single 4S lipo.

Normally I just do watt=amps x voltage to get a general idea at how many watts I need to charge a certain batt, but that is a nice calculator and adds some additional info... Great link

Charging 4 x 4S Lipos on the same time within 1 hour... That is not bad concidering thy are beeing charged at 3.5Amp each....
