just how important is it for the cells to be accurately balanced ?

When you are charging/balancing a battery with one, two or three cells low voltage the charging current is very low around 0,1A.
This takes a long time that' s normal.
At the end of charging/balancing cells have the same voltage.

almost 100 bucks difference for each pack

and even with $100 difference rclipos is one of the cheap suplyers for hyperion batteries and i dont think that it is rclipos who make a bundle of money on this

I have a hyperion duo charger, and I have 4 turnigy packs. 3 of the 4 packs takes 20min to charge (starting from store partial charge), one of the 4 takes 75+min. The difference is due to the balancer cycle...

I also have a problem when I run that pack as it seems to drain at a different rate than the other packs (ie, I'll unexpectedly hit LVC when that battery is in the mix).

On the cost, one thing to consider is hyperion g3 batteries can be charged at *5C*, so you actually need fewer batteries if you can get your charger out in the field. Also, about 25% of the turnigy packs I recieve from HK are DOA on arrival. So when you factor that in, the cost gap closes quite a bit...

I have mostly hyperion packs now and do not regret it. Never had any issues with them.

so far HK batteries been good to me. have about 20 packs here ( zippy,turnigy and rino) and so far this is the first battery that have been an isshue with.
after having 3 runs with the batteries it seems like the one that was "off" os getting closer and closer to the other cells but is still a little off.

when i connsider that a 4s 5000 mah 35c hyperion chost me $238 + postage here in norway the math is simple for me. i just cant aford to pay about $500 for 2 batteries

To me not much of a factor, because most Lipo packs can be charged at more than 1c!
you can easily charge any lipo at 2c and 3c without harm
and keep in mind to keep with the 5c charge rate you will need a big $$ charger to keep up with the expensive packs
I will take my $25 Turningy packs and my $19 Turningy charges and charge 3 packs at the same time and be saving big bucks at the field
so I can have my 20 Turnigy packs at the field vs about 6 or 7 of the higher priced packs
Hmmmmm, I think I will have more runs this way, and I do

If your talking about a Nimh charger, the charger will push more than 4.2v per cell and hurt the pack and catch fire

not shure what you meen with using a standard charger.
my charger had problems with 2 cells that diddent whant to balance propparly.

Can I use an onyx 240 charger to charge 3s 5000 mah 40c turnigys?? It is a double charger and can charge at .8,3,5 amps.. Would that be ok on 3 amps or do I need yet another charger... I've been into big gas boats many years ago, and am new to lipos.. The charger does have the option of nimh or nicad... Thanks for dealing with a Newbie to fe...

i run 3s2p in series and charge them a a 6s and if one cell is low it will charge that one cell at .1 or .2 for 2-4 hours rut low and behold they will balance if your patient i know its inconvient but thats why i have 3 sets for that boat charge the night before and have a couple of runs

from what i read the onyx 240 do NOT have suport for lipo. so you would need a new charger.

Yep. That was the charger. Guess it's going back today... I would love to charge 3sp2p in parallel on each side of a double charger... Is that even possible for a lipo charger? Should I keep the onyx charger just for nimh, or should is there a diverse enough charger that would charge both lipos and nimh.. Thanks for dealing with these questions, but lipos weren't around 20 years ago and. Getting my nine year old girls into fe like I was....

most mordern lipo chargers wil be able to charge your nihm\nicd batteries without a problem. i have never charged in paralel. but i think it is possible and there should be some treads on how to do just that on the forum if you search a little for it

This will meet all your needs but it's quite pricey. I have an older model and it's the best charger I have ever owned - much faster charge times.
